FREE TRADE MOVEMENT

REPLY TO LORD BEAVERBROOK. POLICY OF COMMONWEALTH. Canberra, November 22. The Minister of Customs, Mr Fenton, commenting on Lord Beaverbrook’s proposal for free trade within the British Empire, declared that Lord Beaverbrook should make an attempt to put Britain’s house in order before setting out to remedy the position in the dominions. "Our policy is undoubtedly Australia first, Britain next and then the sister dominions,” he said. "We intend to revise our tariff in order to encourage the development of our own industries, while Britain by contrast has allowed the manufacturers from the cheap labour countries of Europe to establish themselves in the United Kingdom with the result that they are able to produce goods at lower cost than British manufacturers, and are enjoying a preference that certainly is not right.”
