SIGNALS BELIEVED A HOAX. London, November 21. The British Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean reports by wireless that signals have been received from the British steamer Baron Elcho from Tjilatjap requesting immediate assistance, as an attempt had been made to drug or murder the wireless operator. The signals are believed to be a hoax, but four destroyers have been sent to search for the steamer. STATEMENT BY OWNERS. (Rec. 7.30 p.mj London, November 22. The owners of the steamer Baron Elcho sav they are convinced that there is an extraordinary mistake somewhere. When the ship left Port Said on Wednesday for home with a cargo of sugar from Java, she sent a message stating that all was well. The officers and engine-room men are nearly all Clydesiders.'
