ALLEGED SLANDER

TEACHER CLAIMS DAMAGES. NON-SUITED BY JUDGE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 21. The Supreme Court was occupied to-day with an action for alleged slander and a claim for £550 damages brought by Percy McDonald, teacher of Teranga, against Thomas Randall Jenkins, farmer. Plaintiff alleged that defendant said to another farmer: “Have you heard of the trouble McDonald had interfering with big girls at the school?” Mr Justice Smith said, that defendant was chairman of the committee of a country school. “In my opinion on the ground of common interest he was within his right to discuss the matter with a parent. I think it is a case of qualified privilege. There is no evidence of malice.” Plaintiff was non-suited.
