BRILLIANT GOLF.

PROFESSIONAL TITLE

SHAW DEFEATS MOSS TWO AND ONE

LARGE GALLERY THRILLED

(Special to the Times.) Wanganui, October 4

A. J. Shaw (Napier) defeated J. Moss (Auckland) 2 up and 1 to play in the final of the New Zealand professional championship which took place to-day. The weather was fine though a moderately strong wind was disconcerting at times. Both players, especially Shaw, were rather patchy over the first nine holes, but they then settled down and played brilliant golf, thrilling the large gallery time after time, especially towards the finish. Shaw won the first hole, Moss missing an easy putt, but the Aucklander then won the second and third. The next two were halved. A fine three at the Redan put Mass two up, a lead he increased to three when Shaw took three putts on the next green.

The Quarries was halved in fine fours, but both were astray with their seconds at the ninth and Moss had to negotiate a stymie to halve the hole. Shaw missed a chance of a two and win at the tenth, but struck trouble at Long Tom and was a trifle lucky to halve the hole, Moss’s putt running round the hole. Moss was bunkered at the next and Shaw reduced the lead. Moss was much too strong with his second at the thirteenth, but holed a 15 footer for a half. Shaw sliced his tee shot badly at Encampment, but recovered grandly and halved the hole. Moss was short with his tee shot at the next and Shaw got another back. Shaw was too strong with his second at Bunker’s Hill and Moss was two up again. Shaw then finished with two sensational birdie threes and squared the game again. At the last hole, both hit magnificent seconds, but Moss missed his four footer and Shaw sank his two and a half footer. Afternoon Round. Starting in the afternoon, Shaw was bunkered at the first and Mose, with a perfectly placed four, went into the lead again. Shaw, however, squared matters by holing his chip for an eagle three at the second. Shaw failed to get up at the third and Moss had no trouble in winning with a four. The fourth was halved in perfect fours, but then Shaw helped himself to another birdie at the short fifth, winning with a two to a three. The sixth was halved, but Moss was short with his second at the seventh and was one down. Both pqtted for three at the Quarries, but the hole was halved in fours as was the ninth. Shaw had come out in 35 and Moss in 36.

Both started badly at the tenth and a half in four resulted. Moss was short with his second at Long Tom and Shaw won the hole with a beautiful four. Terawhiti was halved in three and Alma in fours. Moss sliced his second at the fourteenth and looked like losing the hole, but he chipped up nicely and holed a ten-footer and then Shaw missed a three-footer for a half. However, the Napier man then canned a fortyfooter for a two at French Pass and was two up again. This was sensational golf, but there were more to follow. Shaw was short and bunkered and Moss just on the far edge at the sixteenth. Shaw recovered well and had a chance of getting a four when Mass sank a 40-footer for a win. Moss was just through at the seventeenth and Shaw was on the far edge. The Aucklander chipped up perfectly to within two feet of the pin and the game looked sure to go to the last green when Shaw canned another 40-footer and won 2 up and one to play. Shaw was three under fours and Moss two under for the 17 holes played in the afternoon.

The result of the long drive competition ■was: Professionals: A. H. Fuller 291yds, 272 vds; A. E. Pass 282yds, 256yds. Amateurs: T. H. Horton 272yds, 252yds; C. H. Stephenson 262yds 250yds.
