GIRL GUIDES
THE GORE BODY.
RANGER COMPANY FORMED.
The Girl Guide movement has developed particularly well at Gore, and the organization has proved very popular since its inception. The Guides, however, do not make provision for girls who have attained to the age of 16 years and to meet the needs of those girls who desire to retain their association with guiding, ranger companies have been formed to keep the older girls together and to provide them with opportunities to assist the junior movement. With the object of forming such a company at Gore, a meeting was held in the R.S.A. rooms on Thursday evening, Miss R. I. V. Aitken presiding over a most enthusiastic gathering. Miss Aitken, who is District Commissioner, outlined the objects of ranger companies, and stated that Gore was particularly fortunate in securing the services of Mrs S. Newell to control the ranger movement, as she had served with the women’s branch of the Royal Air Force during the war, and she had also gained considerable experience in the Guide movement, a fact that was demonstrated in her work at Tapanui.
Mrs Newell also addressed the girls, and it was unanimously agreed that a ranger company should be formed at Gore, to meet every Thursday evening! Mrs Newell was appointed captain and Miss M. Liddell lieutenant. Altogether 21 girls and young women joined up, and 10 more are expected to join later. Six of those present undertook to assist with the work among the Brownies. It was agreed that the company should work along club lines.
