MARINERS FINED
UNLAWFULLY PLYING FOR HIRE.

Palmerston North, July 23.
Recently the Marine Department proceeded against Janies Johnston and Maurice Field charged as owner and master respectively of the ship Viking, not exceeding six tons register, and propelled by gas they did unlawfully carry passengers to sea for hire without a duly certificated master or engineer. A further charge against Johnston as owner of the vessel was plying in navigable waters between Paraparaumu and Kapiti without a valid certificate of survey.
Giving reserved judgment Mr Stout, S.M., said no doubt fishing boats which as such are exempt from the provisions of survey in the Shipping and Marine Act and as to carrying a duly certicated master or engineer, in the amending Act must coipply with the provisions if they hire boats out to fishing or picnic parties. Fines were inflicted on defendants.
