FIRE IN MELBOURNE

BOURKE STREET PREMISES GUTTED. NEARLY HALF MILLION DAMAGE. Melbourne, July 22. The most spectacular and destructive fire which has occurred in the city since the Town Hall fire in 1925 swept through the premises of Payne’s Bon Marche in Bourke street. Hie flames spread to the adjoining premises, including the furniture warehouse owned by Patterson’s, Ltd., three floors of which were badly damaged. Payne’s were completely gutted. One hundred firemen fought the flames for four hours. There were thousands of spectators. The damage is estimated at £400,000. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. —Australian Press Association.
