MATAURA NEWS

HIGHLAND SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura Highland Society was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday, when despite cold weather and the prevalence of sickness the attendance was satisfactory. Chief A. N. Mac Gibbon presided and proceedings opened with community singing after which the nominations of officers was proceeded with. The nominations were as follows: Chief A. N. Mac Gibbon; chieftains, Clansmen W. Buchanan and Jas. Sutherland; treasurer, Clansmen J. Taylor; secretary, Clansman D. Russell; committee, Clansmen D. M. Lockhart, A. Baineaves, W. P. Thorn, J. Buchanan, A. Pryde, P. Amos, Jas. Ingram and H. Ross; bard, Clansmen J. C. Abernethy; accompanist, Clansman P. Amos; pipers, Clansmen W. and J. A. Cameron; auditors, Clansmen A. J. Grant and P. Amos. When the business of receiving nominations had been dealt with, the Chief referred to recent bereavements sustained by Clansmn T. Glover and Clansfolk Mr and Mrs A. J. Grant, and a vote of condolence with them was passed in the usual manner. The Chief then extended a cordial welcome to one of the old members of the society in Clanswoman P. Tait, who paid a visit to the society.

The remainder of the evening was spent in progressive euchre and harmony. Prizes for euchre were awarded to Master Willie Martin, consolation, Chieftain W. Buchanan, Clanswoman A. Todd, consolation, Clanswoman Mrs P. Amos.
