BLUFF NOTES
SOCIAL AND DANCE. (From Our Correspondent.) The members of the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Ladies’ Guild gave a dance and social on Thursday evening last in aid of the Earthquake Fund, but owing to the inclemency of the weather, together with the prevaience of the influenza scourge, the attendance was not so large as was anticipated. Supper was provided by the ladies of the guild, and all surplus cakes were afterwards sold, realizing no less than £2. Every individual member worked with a will and the function passed off with enthusiasm. The honorary treasurer is able to report the receipt of from £l3 to £l4, which may be considered good under the exceptional circumstances which Bluff and other centres of New Zealand are experiencing at the present financially. Presentation. A very pleasing ceremony was performed on Saturday morning last when Miss Winnie Metzger, a daughter of one of our most prominent citizens, was the recipient of a presentation from the committee and members of the Bluff Amateur Swimming Club. She is leaving Bluff for Wyndham. Sergeant Tonkinson, in handing over a beautiful set of xylonite toilet brushes, spoke feelingly of the esteem in which the young lady had endeared herself to the executive and club members in the past, her many sportsmanlike qualities in turning out for her club and helping the interests of Bluff girl swimmers particularly. Messrs Budd, W. Smith, Skipworth, Paul McQuarrie and J. Morrison also endorsed the remarks of the chairman, one and all wishing her every happiness in her new sphere of life, expressing the hope that they would see her in the annual re-unions of the Bluff regattas on many more New Year days to come. Bluff Road Relief Works. Everything is in trim for a commencement of the widening of the Bluff road to-day, the Southland County Council having in the past few days installed the greater part of the plant. One camp appears to be situated at Greenhills and another at Ocean Beach. The long bend in the road after passing Greenhills, it is understood, will be eliminated, by going straight across the lagoon that runs along the railway embankment, and the further bend adjacent to Mr Nichols’ property nearing Ocean Beach will take a route from near Mr Bairnsdale’s house in a direct line with the library building at the works. The old road will however be untouched for those travellers who enjoy the sylvan native bush.
