HOMING PIGEONS
LAST RACE OF YOUNG BIRD SEASON. On Saturday, May 18, the Southland Homing Pigeon Club flew the last race of the young bird season from Oamaru, an air line distance of 157 miles. The birds were liberated by the stationmaster in rough weather at 9 a.m., the first bird homing at 3.8 p.m. The race resulted in rather an easy win for E. Gibb’s First Star, which homed seven minutes ahead of W. Patterson’s Reliance, while J. Meflin’s Mayfair was 15 seconds away third. First Star has been a very consistent bird this season, having been timed in by Mr Gibb in five races, a performance which speaks for itself. The young bird season has been a very successful one, and when the old bird races commence in August there should be some very keen racing. The Oamaru results were as follows:— E. Gibb’s Blue cheq. hen First Star, 6hrs Bmins 1 W. Paterson’s pied red cock Reliance, 6hrs lamins 2 J. Meflin’s blue cheq. hen Mayfair, - 6hrs 15mins 15sccs 3 Also timed in.—J. W. Cox, T. Kearney and N. Shaw.
