COMMENT uri THE RACING. LARGE ATTENDANCE OF PUBLIC. SOUTHLAND HORSES PROMINENT. (From Our Special Reporter.) Dunedin, June 3. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting was continued in overcast, but fine weather. It was very cold, but otherwise a favourable day for steeplechasing and hurdle racing. There was a very large attendance and it is understood the gate receipts for the first and second days showed a substantial increase. For the Sil verstream Handicap Lucky Light was made favourite to carry about 350 tickets more than Red Sea, with Night Effort 632 chances off in third place 116 supporters ahead of Filosol, but Pukemaori, Membo, Haze, Pound Note and several others were keenly followed. The pool amounted to £3595, as against. £2,576 10/last season. From a good start. Little Queen led out and showed the way to the straight from Crossbow, On Watch, Red Sea, Pukemaori and Town Major, while Lucky Maid put in a run from the home turn. Lucky Light was hemmed in on the rails and could not get out. In the run home Red Sea looked like winning but Town Major joined her inside the distance and Lucky Maid came fast. An exciting finish resulted in Town Major (L. Woolford I winning by a head from Red Sea (L. J. Ellis), with Lucky Maid (A. Eastwood) a neck off third, a head in front of Pukemaori (M. Cappie), then came’Crossbow and Lucky Light, the last-named finishing very wide out and travelling very fast after an unlucky trip. The winner, who is owned in Central Otago and was bred in Australia, returned a double-figure price. Red Sea ran a good race and Pukemaori and Lucky Maid also did well. There was heavy speculation on the Provincial Handicap for which Royal Saxon (C. Emerson) was elected first fancy carrying 864 tickets more than King Balboa, with Circulation 119 chances away in third position 138 friends ahead of Money Mine, while Town Bank and Malmsey also had fair followings. The pool amounted to £5017, as against £4910 10/- last, season.

From an even start Royal Saxon was first to break the line, then Some Rose took up the running from Margaret Birney, with Royal Saxon next. Racing to the far turn, King Balboa moved up into second place behind Some Rose, then came Town Bank and Royal Saxon. At the home turn Some Rose was just showing out from King Balboa. As the field ran into the home stretch Royal Saxon made a move, but his effort was short lived and he was one of the first beaten. At the distance King Balboa was in command, but almost at once Malmsey got through on the rails. Galloping on strongly Malmsey (C. Eastwood) won by two lengths from King Balboa (L. J. Ellis) with Circulation (F. Ingram) a head away third, a head in front of Money Mine (A. Eastwood), then came Town Bank (L. Woolford), Some Rose (M. Cappie), and Royal Saxon.

The favourite (Royal Saxon) ran a very disappointing race and was badly beaten from the home turn. King Balboa raced well, but found it impossible to concede 171 b to a smart galloper like Malmsey. Money Mine and Circulation ran fair races, but Countersign was never in the picture. The winner returned a nice price. For the Otago Hurdle Handicap Lancer was first in order of selection carrying 124 tickets more than Troilus, with Wharncliffe 356 chances away in third place 749 supporters ahead of Nine of Spades. The pool was £3596 10/-, as against £3722 last season. Heisler made the early racing from Brightling, Troilus, and Lancer, while Wharncliffe dropped back early. After clearing the battens at the stand Troilus took command from Nine of Spades Heisler and Lancer. Approaching the far turn Troilus was attended by Heisler, Lancer and Nine of Spades in line. Troilus led Lancer to the straight, while Brightling was well in the rear and Wharncliffe was moving up. In the run home lancer (D. O’Connor) won nicely by a length from Troilus (I. Tilson) with Nine of Spades (G. Salt) five lengths off third, while Wharncliffe (E. Shaw) was some distance off fourth, Brightling fifth and Heisler last. Wharncliffe gave a very disappointing display during the earlj' stages but was staying on well at the finish. Brightling raced well for a mile and a-half then tired and faded out. He jumped outwards at most of his fences. The winner scored with something in hand. Nine of Spades was beaten before reaching the straight. As the result of an inquiry C. Eastwood was suspended for the rest of the meeting for interfering with Ronaki when riding Malmsey in the Winter Handicap on Saturday. After the Provincial Handicap Money Mine was sold by Mr C. Gieselcr to Mr W. Swale, of Liniehills, Southland. For the Wai-Rongoa Handicap Caterpillar was sent out as first selection, carrying 119 tickets more than Great Star, with Meadow Lark 1116 chances away in third place six supporters ahead of Waving Corn. The pool read at £5221, as against £4396 10/- last season. From a good start Waving Corn and Coomassie were slow to move and lost ground. Meadow Lark was first to show out, but before-the far turn was reached Caterpillar had taken charge from Great Star, Royal Tractor and Arrowmir. When the straight was reached Caterpillar was still in command, but Great Star tackled her, at the distance and wore her down to win by a length, with Taboo (D. O’Connor) three lengths away third, attended by Meadow'Lark, Waving Corn, Coomassie and First Raid in order. C. Emerson had a comfortable ride on Great Star, who outstayed Caterpillar at the finish. Battle Flag raced badly, Waving Corn appeared to strike trouble going along the back as she could not hold her place and faded to the rear. Tripaway was another starter who could not go the pace and she was well back when the straight was reached. The North Islander, Handy, was made first fancy for the Wingatui Steeplechase carrying 868 tickets more than Fabriano, with Nylotis 360 chances off in third berth 734 supporters ahead of Mainspring, while Greenstone was close up next. At the first fence Greenstone fell and gave G. Dempster a rather nasty fall. Fabriano drew away from the outset and when the stand double was reached he was about seventy yards in advance of his rivals, who were racing in close order. Going to the back Handy and Mainspring commenced to gain quickly on Fabriano, while Nvlotis improved his position. At the double on the far side Handy and Mainspring were with Fabriano. Drawing away again Fabriano led into the straight, where he was challenged bv Mainspring. In a keen finish Mainspring (E. Shaw) won by threeouarters of a length from Fabriano (D. O'Connor) with Handy (C. Stratton) forty yards away third followed by Nylotis.

Mainspring returned a surprising price running into double figures. Handy jumped well but could not see the journey out in a solidly-run contest. Weight stopped Nylotis, who was well back at the finish. Fabriano jumped well, but Mainspring had him beaten tor pace over the last furlong.

Bulolo (R. Beadle) was sent out first in demand for the Janefield Handicap carrying 653 tickets more than Red Boa, with Sweet Refrain 82 chances off in third place 364 supporters in front of Impertinence (W. Pascoe) while Best Policy (A. Eastwood) was also strongly fancied. The pool was £5328 10/-, as gainst £4574 10/- last season. Frasquita (C. Brodie) gave trouble at the start and finally got rid of her jockey as the barrier lifted. Dumblane was pulled up at the end of a furlong. From a good start Kate Kelly, Waihemo, Impertinence, Bulolo, Glenrowan, The Dove and Nanette were smartest to begin. Rounding the far turn and climbing the rise Kate Kelly, The Dove and Glenrowan were on terms with Red Boa coming fast on the outside. Below the distancs Red Boa (L. J. Ellis) raced up to the leaders and going on won by threequarters of a length from Glenrowan (W. Cooper) who was nearly a length in front of Best Policy (A. Eastwood) who came with a fast run in the stretch, Impertinence was close up fourth then came Bulolo, Sweet Refrain, and Cupid’s Dart. Halfway down the straight Bulolo was noted going well, but he could not get out to join the leaders. After finishing second in a number of events L. J. Ellis won his first race of the meeting. Red Boa ran in the name of his trainer, R. McKay, owing to a bereavement in his owner’s family. The winner stayed on well and appeared to have a little 'in reserve at the finish. Kate'Kelly ran a good race to the distance where she faded out. Glenrowan was always prominent. Best Policy ran like an early win-

Kaihahu was first fancy for the I'orbury Steeplechase Handicap carrying 204 tickets more than Terehu, with Royal Land 886 chances off in third place 605 supporters ahead of Rag Tag. The pool’was £3OBB 10/-, as against. £3230 10/- last year. Terehu at once raced to the front from Wairio and Royal Land. When the stand double was reached Terehu was well clear of Kaihahu and Rag Tag. The sod wall was crossed safely. When the back was reached Terehu was going well when he bumped his rider (D. McMullan) off at the fence near the seven furlong mark. This left Kaikahu in front followed by Rag Tag and Wairio. At the post and rails at. the far turn Royal Land struck heavily. Easily holding sis own, Kaikahu (D. O Connor) won easily by eight lengths from Rag Tag (A. Youngman! with Wairio (E. Mackie) eight lengths away third, Royal Land was next a long way back. Pantier was eased up at the far turn and did not complete the course. Terehu was going well when he lost his rider, but. Kaikahu would probably have beaten him in any case as he gave a fine display for a horse new to the cross-country game. Wairio and Rag Tag both jumped well, but could not gallop with Kaikahu.

Wagering on the Invermay Handicap was very heavy with Latin Quarter running as first fancy, carrying about two hundred and twenty tickets more than Narrative with Fairy Herald 542 chances away in third place, 950 supporters ahead of Red Racer. The pool was £6737 10/- as against £6224 I'o/- last. year.

Fairy Herald gave trouble at the post but. the field got away to a good start. Fairy Herald first showed out. from Wayward then Ronaki took up the running in company with Wayward while Fairy Herald was in third place attended by Latin Quarter. At the home turn Latin Quarter joined the leaders and Narrative became prominent. Below the distance Latin Quarter had charge and his victory was being proclaimed but first Narrative then Miss Mercia challenged. In a desperate race to the judge, Latin Quarter (I. J- McKay) and Miss Mercia (A. Messervey) could not be separatee! and a dead heat was declared while Narrative (A. Eastwood) was a head off third, Fairy Herald (J. Dooley) close up fourth. Then came Carnot (W. Cooper) and Wayward (L. J. Ellis). It was a great finish. Latin Quarter, withstood extreme pressure particularly well. Miss Mercia who tied with the Invercargill representative is an Australian bred mare owned on the West. Coast and trained at Greymouth by J. Stewart. She came fast, in the straight and put up a very game fight to return a double figure price. Narrative put in a fine run in the home stretch and Fairy Ilerald also put in a good claim. Carnot was fifth and Wayward next.

THE RACING REVIEWED. E. A. KEESING INJURED. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, June 3. Overcast but fine weather with a great crowd iu attendance marked the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie to-day. The course was in good order, a little bit faster than on the opening day. The tote handled £89,758 compared with £94,392 on the same day last year. Odin, although favourite, was at a good price in the opening event, the Hunt Cup, while there was good support for Taumai. The latter was a bit unlucky for he nearly unshipped his rider at the second to last fence when threatening danger to Odin. The favourite went to the front at the start and Taumai was always in second berth. Arriving at the last fence, Pikimai also joined issue but Odin carried too many guns and scored from Taumai by four lengths with three lengths back to Pikimai. The second fence saw Marita tip out and Terrapeen fell commencing the second round. Palmares put up a great performance in the Ranfurly Handicap in which he was only fifth favourite. He was tailing the field for half a mile and had only three horses behind him at the home turn, but he finished with a remarkable burst in the centre of the course to win by a neck from the little fancied Catapult with Te Money, Kawainga and Pompeius right up and Sea Cob, Catonian, Always, Bahama, Ariliana and Prince Vai following. Pompeius was unlucky. All started in the Remuera Hurdles, King’s Guard (£3270) and Kauri Park (£2214), who had such a hard finish in the Greenlane Steeplechase the first day, disputing favouritism but the winner turned up in the imported horse Bright Land whose success completed the hat trick for the Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson, winning the two previous races with Odin and Palmares. At the start, Bright Land went to the front and passing the stands the first time was eight lengths in front from Boomerday, Cybele, Kamehameha, Glenotus, Kauri Park and King’s Guard, there not being much between the last lot. The field closed on the pacemaker down the back but Bright Lad was still going well at the home turn; two lengths'in advance of Kamehameha, Kauri Park and King’s Guard, all of whom had chances, but Bright Land, although uncertain at the final jump, easily held his own and won by two and a-half lengths from the little fancied Kamehameha with Kauri Park half a length back, the same distance in front of King’s Guard. There was a big gap back to Glenotus, Cyb'ele and Boomerday. The Great Northern Steeplechase was an entertaining race without being exciting over the last circuit and it ended in one of the biggest surprises in the history of the race, Uralla winning comfortably. She was bracketed with Zircon and even then the price reached double figures. She might otherwise have paid about half a century. Glendowie (£3503) was a big favourite wtih money for Kawini (£2532), the Wedding March—Roman Abbey bracket (£2472), with the Uralla-Zircon bracket carrying £792. Comical tipped out at the first fence and it might have been more than a coincidence that it was the same fence where he blundered in his schooling. Coming over the water jump nearing the end of the first circuit, there was not a great deal between Zircon, Maunga, Roman Abbey, Uralla, Wiltshire, Red Fuchsia, Glendowie, King Fame, Kawini, Vexatious and Wedding March with Mangani pulling up here. On the next circuit, negotiating the double with once round to go, Uralla held a*slight advantage over Roman Abbey, Kawini, Glendowie, Maunga and King Fame. On the hill the last time Uralla was eight lengths in front of Roman Abbey and Kawini with a big gap back to King Fame, Maunga and Glendowie. From this out, Uralla was not troubled and she won by ten lengths from Roman Abbey who finished better than Kawini, the latter being two lengths back. Twelve lengths further off came King Fame and then Maunga and Glendowie. After his fall on Saturday Wiltshire was sore and he was pulled up in the final round. Red Fuchsia fell on the hill the second time. Vexatious broke a leg approaching the old water jump the first time and was destroyed. A big field of 26 contested the King George Handicap in which there was a good deal of scrambling. The winner turned up in the game little filly Lucy Rose who, although fourth favourite, paid a solid double figure dividend. .Several horses got away badly but the favoured pair, Billikins and Ohinemuri, got away in front and they led into the straight attended by Kingfield, Oration, Vallar, Lucy Rose and Black Duke. Once straightened up Lucy Rose collared the leaders and drew out to win nicely by two and a half lengths from Black Duke with Standfast finishing fast three parts of a length further back, just in front of Vallar who weakened over the last bit. King Lu was right up, then came The Lover, Billikins, Kingfield, Ohinemuri and High Pitch. One hundred yards from the post Merry Mint fell when racing prominently, his rider, E. A. Keesing, sustaining internal injuries and being sent to hospital. His condition is understood to be rather serious. Prince Lu was a hot favourite for the Panmure Hurdles. He tried to win all the way but Overhaul never let him get far. At five furlongs from home, he ran up to the leader and turned for home well clear with Prince Lu, Golden Wedding, Star Comet, Lady Spalpeen and Horomea following. Overhaul was always doing it well and he won comfortably by three lengths from Golden Wedding with Horomea, who finished impressively, a similar distance back in third place. The next home were Prince Lu, Star Comet (who was badly ridden), Umtali, Lady Spalpeen, Master Doon and Te Waka. The Carbine Plate for amateur riders attracted 13 runners and there was most money for Maori Boy (£5576) who was sent out a good favourite with Otairi at a nice price. Maori Boy went to the front at the barrier rise and led right round to the home turn from Lucess, Master Clements, Storm Fiend, Otairi and Mon Star. Once in line, Otairi came through and went on to win splendidly by three and a half lengths from Glena Bay with Maori Boy a neck away, his rider being caught napping on the" post, but for which he should have been second. Storm Fiend was fourth and Hakanoa, Foxhound and Mon Star followed. Archeria lost an iron and pulled up. Mr R. Duncan, the owner, rode a great race on Otairi. WEIGHTS FOR WEDNESDAY. GOLF TOURNAMENT AT OTATARA. MASTERS WINS SOUTHLAND GHAM.- . PIONSHIP. There was a record entry of 80 for the King’s Birthday tournament held on the Otatara course yesterday under the auspices of the Invercargill Golf Club. The weather was ideal for the game and the course was in excellent order. Despite the large entry there was little congestion, the competitors being despatched at regular intervals and keeping their places well. .The principal event was the amateur championship of Southland, for which a cup presented by the Amateur Sports Trust was in competition for the first time. The cup will remain permanently with the Invercargill Club, but the Sports Trust also donates a miniature each year for the winner. The announcement of the generous gift for the encouragement of golf in the district was received with a round of enthusiastic applause when it was announced to the large gathering in the Club House at the distribution of prizes. The championship was decided this year by two stroke rounds, C. A. Masters winning with two first class rounds of 75. He won by seven strokes from the second competitor, Jas. A. Mangan, who also had a score of 75 in the afternoon but had taken 82 in the morning. Both handicap events were won by country players, who were present in large numbers, and C. Campbell had a day out so far as the special prizes were concerned, winning four of them. Following are the details of the events: — SOUTHLAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

C. A. Masters and Jas. A. Mangan tied with 75, for the special prize for the best gross score played during the day, and decided to play five holes to decide it. Mangan won with a score of 22, Masters taking 24. NO. 1 MEDAL HANDICAP.

The special prize given to the player in this competition who returned the best nett score with a handicap over 21 was won by C. Campbell 98—24—74, and the same player tied with G. J. McHarg (94 —20 —74) for the special prize for the competitor returning the best nett score who had not been playing more than two years. The tie was decided by a toss, Campbell winning. NO. 2 MEDAL HANDICAP.

The special prize given to the player in this competition who returned the best nett score with a handicap over 21 was won by 0. Campbell 100—24—76, and the same player tied with W. The finale of the Wairarapa golf championship was decided to-day on the Lansdowne links in ideal weather, T. H. Horton (Masterton) beating' R. Wagg (Lower Hutt) 1 up. The driving of both players was good, Wagg having a very slight advantage, but the putting of both was exceptionally weak. Taken as a whole the golf was not up to championship standard and not equal to the performances in the semi-finals. The first five holes were halved, Horton winning the sixth and seventh. The next six holes were halved, Wagg winning the fourteenth and fifteenth and Horton the sixteenth, making the latter 1 up. The last two were halved. HAGEN v. COMPSTON. THE BLACKWELL MATCH. AMERICAN’S IMPROVED FORM. London, June 1. Walter Hagen (America) who was badly beaten at Moor Park the previous day, was destined to experience another reverse during the first nine holes at Blackwell, for Archie Compston (Britain) won the first, two holes and was four up at the ninth. Then Hagen began to play some of his best golf and won the next three holes with 3,2, and 4, and continued to obtain brilliant figures to square the match at the 18th. Hagen did the round in 71, against Compston’s 72. The latter made a mess of the short 18th, which cost him five. Hagen stated that he may not defend his title in Britain next year. It is possible he will be visiting Australia, though nothing definite has been settled.—Australian Press Association.
