HISTORY OF TOBACCO. 1492 Columbus discovers tobacco. 1565 Sir John Hawkins brings tobacco into England. 1586 Ralph Lane, first governor of Virginia, teaches Sir Walter Raleigh to smoke. 1848 Dill’s Best creates sensation as new tobacco accomplishment. 1853 Wooden pipes appear on English market. 1868 First smoking apartments appear on railroads. 1876 Prince of Wales adjourns, with host, to stables for a smoke. Smokingrooms not yet in vogue. 1929 Dill’s Best has become one of the most popular tobaccos in New Zealand.
