RELIABILITY TRIALS
SOUTHLAND MOTOR CYCLE CLUB. A FAIRLY STIFF COURSE. The Southland Motor Cycle Club held a successful Reliability Trial yesterday, over 40 riders taking part. Conditions were not ideal as much of the route was over clay roads which were rather slippery. As a consequence, the course was fairly stiff, particularly for side-cars, and the penalty mark"ing was on the whole much heavier than the previous year. Out of a total entry of 40, only 24 checked in at the completion of the course. It is understood that spills were frequent, but no one was hurt. The course started from the Crescent and passed through Hokonui, Dunsdale, Waimutnu, Gore, Pukerau, Otaraia Gorge, Mataura, Brydone, Dacre and thence back to Invercargill. The total course was about 128 miles. Below are the results: — Class A. Solo, under 400 c.c.s.: First, F. W. Stevenson (349 A.J.S.) 885 points; second, L. W. Shave (348 Douglas) 875 points; third, E. J. McDonald (349 o.h.v. 8.5. A.) 830 points. Class B. Solo, over 400 c.c.s.: First, G. J. Winton (498 o.h.v. Triumph) 959 points; second, J. F. Dundas (498 o.h.v. Triumph) 928 points; third, W. Knuckey (493 o.h.v. 8.5. A.) 890 points. Class C, Sidecar: First, T. W. Stewart (1206 Indian) 735 pointe; second, R. McLees (497 o.h.v. Ariel) 455 pointe; third, W. Carter (498 A.J.S.) 430 pointe. Only four side-cars completed out of an entry of eight. Team results: Nine teams entered but only four competed. Gore Junior Team (F. W. Stevenson, L. W. Shave, E. J. McDonald) 2590 1; Ryan Brothers Team (J. A., J. F. and W. Ryan) 2245, 2; Tapper team (W. Knuckey, G. J. Winton, H. S. Jones) 2053, 3; Mangapiri team (R., F. and H. McLees) 1850 fourth.
