LADIES’ HOCKEY

AN INTERESTING GAME. THORNBURY DEFEATS UNION. Thornbury again demonstrated their surprisingly good form on Saturday afternoon when they defeated by eight goals to two a Union team which had travelled out. The country team have evidently benefited considerably by the two previous matches with town teams and they now combine good tactics with speed and accurate hitting. If their game was made yet more “heady”, they would form a very strong team. The following teams took the field:— Thornbury: Misses S. Urquhart; V. Hillis, E. Hillis; K. Fallow, H. Ronald, L. Hamilton; C. McLean, M. Molloy, H. Johnstone, R. Miller, I. Fallow. Union: Misses D. Hawke; M. Fletcher, N. King; L. Fraser, M. Woods, J. Ronald; D. Cleine, O. Elley, M. Gerken, A. Conley, J. Chalmers. Thornbury opened up the offensive and Miss C. McLean was soon down the line, passing to Miss Molloy, who in turn gave the ball to Miss Johnstone, who shot well and scored. Thornbury kept on attacking and play was confined largely to Union’s quarters. Miss Miller gave a goal a good try, but the ball hit the post and rebounded into play whereupon Miss Chalmers secured and gained ground for Union. The country team again swept down the field and Miss Molloy shot, the goalie stopped but Miss Johnstone retrieved the goal and was again successful in goaling. Thornbury 2; Union 0. Again play reverted to Union’s quarters and Miss McLean made an attempt at a goal from a difficult angle but the ball hit Mass Hawke’s foot and glanced from its course. Within the next few minutes, Miss Johnstone, well fed by her other forwards, was enabled to make the score four—nil. Shortly afterwards, Miss Chalmers for Union made a very spectacular solo rush which resulted in Union’s first goal. Securing the ball near the half-way line, she dashed up the middle of the field and eluded half-backs, full-backs and, having outstripped all others was faced with only the goalie to stop her. Miss Urquhart wisely moved out from the goal but after a brief duel for the possession of the ball, Miss Chalmers got. it past her and made the score Thornbury 4, Union 1. Before halftime whistle blew, Miss Johnstone and Miss Miller had each scored a further goal for Thornbury. Thornbury 6, Union 1. After half-time the unusual sight was seen of Miss Hawke, so well-known as a goalie, playing full-back (where she acquitted herself well) while Miss King took her place in between the goal posts. Play had not been in progress long after half-time before Miss Miller, receiving from Miss I. Fallow, was able to score a goal for Thornbury with a hard shot. Union at this time were being- pressed very hard and there was a thrilling five minutes when Thornbury massed, their forces almost on the goal line and seemed about to force their way across en bloc. Miss Miller made another shot, but the ball went astray and a 25 followed, from which Miss Chalmers was away down the field and was again confronted by only the goalie who repeated her tactics, but ran out almost too dangerously far. However, she beat Miss Chalmers to the ball, but when the rest of the teams came up, the danger of her position was seen and other Thornbury players had to hold the fort while she ran back into place. However, no score eventuated. Miss Johnsstone scored again for Thornbury shortly after. Just on time, Union rallied and after a combined forward movement, Miss Cleine shot and scored, making the final score: Thornbury 8, Union 2. Mr E. H. Logie refereed the match. At the conclusion of the game, the visiting team was very hospitably entertained.
