' INVERCARGILL DEFEATS CENTRAL. RANGERS MAKE GOOD FIGHT. Conditions were good for soccer on Saturday and two games- were played. Rangers surprised the onlookers by putting up a great fight against Corinthians, two of their players, Ferguson and Maxwell, playing splendid football. Central did not do as well as was expected, being defeated by four to nil by Invercargill. Both games were fast and clean and the conduct of the players was excellent. CORINTHIANS (4) v. RANGERS (2). The teams were: — Corinthians (Blue): Price, Heyricks, McLellan, McKay, Turner, McMurdo, Archbold, Morrison, Devon, Wright, Cathcart. Rangers (Black and White) : Greenfield, Maxwell, A. Robinson, Williamson, Batchelor, Glass, Ferguson, L. Robinson, Kirkham, Stirling, Davenport. Corinthians kicked off against the wind and Cathcart went down the wing and shot, but Greenfield made a good save. Turner kicked back and Devon shot, but missed. Corinthians again attacked and Wright centred. Archbold attempted to head into the net, but the ball went past. Play hung in Rangers’ territory for some time until Robinson cleared and Rangers attacked for Ferguson to kick over. Corinthians attacked, but Robinson cleared with a good kick. Wright returned, but shot wide. Handling gave Corinthians a free kick, but Maxwell cleared. Cathcart secured a corner and Turner headed in for another corner. Corinthians continued to attack and Maxwell cleared on several occasions. Catligart finally put in a low corner shot which beat Greenfield. Turner put in a ground kick from well out and it went right through to the net. Corinthians 2 Rangers 0 Rangers attacked, but McKay cleared. Rangers returned and Kirkham tried to get through, but was robbed by McKay. Turner sent down a long shot and Cathcart tried from the wing, but the ball went wide. Rangers attacked, but were forced back. Turner passed to Devon, who passed to Cathcart, but the shot missed. Rangers gave two corners in quick succession and half-time came a few minutes later. Corinthians attacked and Archbold kicked over the net. Rangers returned and Fergusbn netted from close in. Corinthians 2 Rangers .. 1 ■ Corinthians attacked and secured a corner, but Batchelor cleared. Turner kicked back and Maxwell cleared. Morrison shot and hit the post. McKay passed to Morrison, who shot wide. The ball remained in Rangers’ territory, but Corinthians could not get past'Maxwell, who was kicking and heading in splendid style. Devon shot and Greenfield saved with a corner. Cathcart kicked wide and Turner secured a corner, but Morrison put his fourth ball behind. McMurdo kicked from well out and Maxwell headed over for a corner. McKay headed in and Robinson gave another corner. Archbold put in a good kick, but Maxwell headed clear. Rangers went down, but Turner beat Ferguson and passed to McKay, who hung on too long and the ball went out. Rangers attacked strongly, but Heyricks cleared with a run through. Rangers returned and received a free kick, but Corinthians returned and Archbold secured a corner. He sent

in a close ball and Devon netted. Corinthians 3 Rangers 1 Turner .shot and Maxwell cleared, but the ball was returned and Wright netted. Corinthians 4 Rangers 1 Corinthians continued to attack until Maxwell cleared and Kirkham got right through. Price saved, but Ferguson followed through and netted. Corinthians 4 Rangers 2 Corinthians attacked for a time, but Rangers’ defence was sound. Devon had several shots, but could not get past Maxwell. Wright ballooned it over the bar from close in and Devon shot, but Robinson cleared. Cathcart kicked across and Robinson cleared. Rangers attacked, Williamson and Kirkham making a good run to be stopped by Turner. Corinthians returned, but Maxwell cleared and Rangers received a free kick for handling. Time came a few seconds later. Mr James Morrison was referee. INVERCARGILL (5) v. CENTRAL (0). The teams were:—

Invercargill (Black): R. Drysdale, McIntosh, C. Drysdale, Campbell, Haberfield, Alderson, Penman, Blake, Wilson, Boylan. Central: (Red and White) Carney, Bishop, Anderson, Hodgson, Cullen, Luke, Butler, Clymo, Steele, Catchcart, Kern. Invercargill kicked off. Central was put on the defensive in the early stages, and following up their initial rush, Invercargill broke through for Blake to score with a low shot from close in before two minutes of play had elapsed. Invercargill 1 Central 0 Central took their turn at the offensive. Hodgson, Cullen and Cathcart featured in a rush, but Campbell spoiled their calculations and Invercargill came back into dangerous territory for Central. Play was kept open and Central made a dash to score, but Drysdale saved a hot shot from Cathcart. Wilson made a spectacular dash for Invercargill, but got blocked and the effort finished in a free kick which had no result. P. Anderson put in some useful work which eased several difficult situations for Central. Cathcart got through again and this time found the net, but was offside. With play swinging about in lively style, Central did most of the attacking for a spell. From the left wing the ball swung across to the centre and, when Carney had punched one shot clear, Anderson ran through and beat him with a fast kick along the ground. Invercargill 2 Central 0 A lively contest kept the ball in midfield. Central seemed to lack understanding and did not get very far with some of their promising movements. From half-way Invercargill got. through with little trouble and just before the half-time whistle blew Alderson, who had run in from the right wing, added another to the Blacks’ score. Invercargill 3 Central 0 The game was kept lively when play resumed. It was not long before Blake again netted. Invercargill 4 Central 0 After keeping the Central backs busy for a spell Invercargill got the ball in front of the goal and Drysdale beat Carney with a shot into the bottom corner of the net. Invercargill 5 Central 0 Central were mostly on the defensive until time sounded with no further score. Mr W. Anderson refereed. AUCKLAND RESULT’S. Onehunga (4) beat n>elmont (2).
