POLICE RAID
INVERCARGILL RESIDENT ARRESTED. ALLEGED BREACH OF GAMING ACT. A mild sensation was caused in the town yesterday afternoon when it became known that the premises. of Arthur Edwin Butt, hairdresser, had been raided by the police and that Butt had been arrested on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt, Sergeant Abel, Detective le Sueur, and several constables entered Butt’s tobacconist shop in Esk street shortly after noon and took charge of the shop and saloon. Butt was subsequently arrested and charged with keeping a common gaming house. While the police were in the room they answered several telephone calk from people both in the town and the country. Butt was later taken to the Police Court, where he appeared before Mr R. J. Cumming, Justice of the Peace. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt preferred the charge against Butt and asked for a remand, stating that the charge would have to be heard before a Magistrate. A remand until Saturday was granted and bail was allowed in accused’s own recognizance of £5O and one surety of £5O.
