CROPS DESTROYED

SERIOUS FLOODS IN IRAQ. EUPHRATES AND TIGRIS HIGH. (Rec. 7 p.m.) Baghdad, May 8. As a result of melting snows on the Anatolian mountains the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers have risen to a height unknown at least for half a century. There are many breaches in the rivers’ banks and thousands of acres of winter crops ready for harvesting have been destroyed.

The town of Ramadi is surrounded. Riverine tribes are working day and night repairing and raising the banks. All the Iraq districts are reported to have excellent crops, and many small cultivators will be reduced fo penury. Floods threaten the Baghdad-Basra railway.—Australian Press Association.
