Mr George Thomson has been appointed sole teacher at the Waihoaka School. Mr R. B. Stiven, of Wallacetown, returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. Mr A. J. Willett, son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Willett, 152 Princes street, left from Bluff by the Port Hunter on Thursday en route to England. Mr James Pickup has been elected the second division traffic branch representative on the Railways Appeal Board according to a Gazette announcement last night.— Wellington Press Association message. The following appointments to the Prisons Board were announced in a Gazette last night:—Sir Donald McGavin (Wellington), Mr T. G. Grav (Wellington) and Mrs A. I. Fraer (Christchurch) —Wellington Press Association message. The Acting Director-General of Health (Dr M. H. Watt) will arrive in Invercargill on Wednesday to discuss hospital matters with the Southland Board. He will meet officers of the board informally on Wednesday afternoon and the Building Committee of the board on Thursday morning. At last evening’s meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society a communication was received from Mr G. P. Newton, Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, enclosing a warrant from the Minister appointing Mr H. F. Blatch, of Lynwood, to be a ranger for the Southland district. Mr Carlton Max, manager of the Majestic Theatre, leaves Invercargill on Saturday morning on holiday leave. Mr Max will combine business with pleasure and make a tour of inspection of all the Majestic houses throughout the Dominion, first travelling to Wellington to attend the opening of the 'new Majestic Theatre there on Monday. During Mr Max’s absence, Mr A. R. McElwain will manage the Invercargill house. Mr McElwain arrived by last evening’s express. The chairman of the Southland Hospital Board (Mr John Matheson) made reference at yesterday’s meeting of the board to the death of Sir James Wilson, the chairman of the Palmerston North Board. He mentioned that it was Sir James Wilson who had welcomed the visiting delegates to the recent conference at Palmerston North, and also referred to his long service with the Palmerston North board. A motion of sympathy with the Palmerston North Board was carried. Dr E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, arrived in Invercargill by the express last evening. He was met by Mr W. Alexander (president) and Mr J. S. Dick (secretary) of the Southland League, and Mr A. W. Rodger. While in Invercargill Dr Marsden will discuss with the members of .the Southland League the possible development of Southland’s brown coal deposits, a matter which the league has for some time been advocating and in connection with which a communication was recently forwarded to the Department.
