WYNDHAM NEWS

TOWN BOARD. SPECIAL MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Wyndham Town Board was held on Monday evening, the chairman, Mr G. Hunter, presiding over the following Commissioners: Messrs Andrew Crosbie, Robert G. Carson, Henderson Hunter, Archibald Lindsay, D. Bogue (Town Clerk) and W. H. Nutsford (town inspector). Correspondence. A letter was received from No. 18 District Highways Council, Public Works Department, in reference to tar sealing. In reference to the representatives’ visit to Wyndham, the letter stated that in the event of the board deciding to tar seal any of the main highways within the district, the main highways would be prepared to find the usual subsidy for that class of work of £2 for £l. Detailed information was supplied to the board in connection with the work. The chairman said they would have to put a man on, independent of the board’s officer, to take levels, etc. It was a matter really required in Wyndham, but they were in the dark as regards the cost, etc. Most of the streets under discussion were in order as regards the gravel requirements.

Commissioner H. Hunter said one would think that the Highways Board would supply an engineer for the taking of levels, etc., seeing they were subsidizing the work. It was really an expert’s job, and an ordinary man might not understand the work. He thought it would be a wise move to go into the matter fully and get an engineer to take the levels, etc., and give an estimate for the work. It would not be necessary to go on with the work immediately, as they may. find that they were not in a position to undertake the work. If the work was carried through they might be forced to increase the rates a small bit. They had reduced them threepence the last two years, and there was drainage work, and sundry other works around the town that required attention"'and there would have to be money forthcoming to do them.

The chairman said that if the work could not be paid out of the rates, then the only thing to do was to raise a loan. It was finally decided on the motion of Commissioner H. Hunter and Carson that Mr Wilson (engineer) Gore, be asked to take the levels of the streets and supply the board with an estimate in terms of the letter from the Highways Boards in regard to the tar sealing proposal.

A letter and circular was received from Mr D. McDougall, member for Mataura, in regard to Government a-ssistance to local bodies in relief to unemployment. It was decided on the motion of Commissioner H. Hunter and Crosbie that the District Engineer of Public. Works be communicated with regarding the proposed drainage scheme the board contemplates carrying out, with a view to securing the Government subsidy for unemployment. The secretary of the Wyndham Girls’ Hockey Club wrote advising that at the annual meeting of the club, it had been decided to communicate with the board in regard to the unsatisfactory state of the playing area during the last, year and asking the board to see that the caretaker’s attention was drawn to the matter this year. After some discussion it was decided to leave the matter over for the Reserve Board to deal with. The Eastern District Sub-Union wrote applying for the grounds, and for permission to charge on six days.—Granted. A letter from Mr C. W. Hunt (sanitary contractor) dealing with accusations made against him was read, and held over until a full meeting of the board. General. Commissioner Lindsay asked if the board intended finishing the Main street as regards tarring. The chairman said they were as soon as time was available, the surfaceman was at present employed on the forming of the street at the school. It was decided that a light be erected at the corner of the hall opposite the kitchen, and that two extra lights be erected in Ferry street.

Commissioner Carson introduced the matter of the condition of the street path from Burke’s to Allison’s corner. It was a lagoon in the winter time and badly needed gravelling.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee to look into.
