FIRES
THREE HOUSES GUTTED.
DISASTROUS BLAZE AT TOMAHAWK. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, April 16. A mysterious fire which completely gutted three houses occurred at Tomahawk this morning. In the absence of a fire engine neighbours and passers-by assisted in an attempt to extinguish the flames but were helpless owing to the lack of fire-fight-ing equipment. The bulk of the furniture was removed undamaged but the buildings themselves were totally destroyed despite all efforts to save them. The cause of the outbreak Is a mystery.
OUTBREAK AT BLENHEIM.
Blenheim, April 16.
There was a fire early this morning in the shop of R. Wooster, painter and paperhanger, in Queen Street. The brigade made a good save, although the outbreak occurred in close proximity to a large quantity of oils, paints, etc. The contents of the shop were insured for £5OO in the Phoenix Company. The loss is estimated at £lOO. The premises are part of a block of shops owned by Mr. W. C. Nicholson, of Palmerston North, the whole of which are insured for £l5OO in the London and Lancashire Insurance Company. The damage to the building is approximately £5O.
