SERVICES RECOGNIZED
SIR WILLIAM NOSWORTHY.
COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET
TENDERED.
(Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, April 16. His services to the people of Ashburton County over his period of twenty years as member for the district and Minister of the Crown, were recognized to-night when Sir William Nosworthy was entertained at a banquet given by the citizens of town and country. There was an attendance of about 300, representing local bodies and the public. , Guests were: Sir Heaton Rhodes, Messrs T. D. Burnett, D. Jones and the Hon. F. J. Rolleston. Mr F. G. Evans, provincial president of the Farmers’ Union, presided, and had with him tne Mayor, Mr R. Galbraith.
Apologies for absence were received from Mr J. G. Coates and the Prime Minister, the former eulogizing the work of Mr Nosworthy as Minister of the Crown, saying that he never looked for a gap in the fence. Mr J. Carr, county chairman, in proposing the toast of the guest, spoke in glowing terms of Mr Nosworthy’s work for Ashburton since he was elected in 1908. Sir William said he had no thought on the matter at present, but if the occasion ever arose he would unsheath the sword and again enter the fight.
A grandfather clock was presented to Mr Nosworthy and a gift for Lady Nosworthy. Mr Jones argued claims for co-operation saying that too much time was spent in finding ways of stopping men from working. If Parliament tackled the problem of unemployment as they knew it should be tackled it would soon be solved. The guaranteed rate of 14/- per day was the worst blow ever struck at the New Zealand workers. The coming Parliament would be a most important one and the members would have to bend to meet the blast.
