BALFOUR NOTES. The monthly meeting of the Balfour branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Wm. Orr presiding over an attendance of 15 members. Before commencing the business the president said it was her sad duty to refer to the loss the branch had sustained by the death of one of their members in the person of Mrs Wm. Keown, and she asked those present to stand for a minute in silence as a mark of respect. The secretary added that the result of supplying refreshments at two stock sales was very gratifying, and the sum of £5 was voted towards the community' chest. She also stated that arrangements were well in hand by the Women’s Division and the men’s branch for the combined social and dance to be held on the 19th. It was hoped to make the evening an enjoyable one by catering for all ages. There will be dancing interspersed with solos, musical items, short speeches and cards for nondancers.
The president read the report and bal-ance-sheet of the community chest, and impressed upon members what the community chest means and the great help it has been to many in times of stress and need.
