GORE ACTIVITIES
GENERAL ITEMS. In our advertising columns upon the Gore page appears a public notice drawing attention to the organization of an Empire Shopping Week to be held at Gore from April 29 to May 4. All thoughtful people must realize the necessity for New Zealanders to trade with our best customers, the various divisions of the Empire which buy New Zealand produce, and the fostering of our local industries is a matter of prime importance. It is hoped that, all retailers will join in this movement, so that from April 29 to May 4 window displays and newspaper advertising will unite in demonstrating to the public the varied resources of the British Empire, and the possibility of procuring practically all kinds of commodities from our kinsfolk, without recourse to other nations. Male Choir. At one time Gore possessed a very excellent Male Choir, which under the title of "The Wanderers” and under the conductorship of the late Mr G. Matheson, not only delighted local audiences, but earned for themselves a fine reputation in many outside centres. For a time after the loss of their conductor the party carried on, but eventually lapsed. Recently, however, it was decided to form a male choir and this evening a meeting of members and intending members will be held to consider various matters in connection with its organization. The services of Mr Arthur Lungly, well-known in Dunedin musical circles, and at one time a soloist in the Royal Male Choir, Dunedin, have been secured as conductor, and Miss Ida Mac Gibbon, A.T.C.L., will act as accompaniste. The choir has also received an offer of assistance from the Royal Male Choir, Dunedin, in regard to the purchase of music. It is hoped by those fostering the movement that, the meeting will be largely attended and that as a result of the meeting definite steps will have been taken to place the choir upon a satisfactory basis. Thrifty Scholars. The number of depositors in the Gore School savings bank department is 145, and the deposits now amount to £lOl 16/10 —an excellent result seeing the first deposit was made on June 30, 1928. The headmaster’s report to the School Committee on Friday night indicated that the account has increased by exactly £l2 during the past three weeks.
