DISASTROUS FIRE
OUTBREAK AT DUNEDIN. PORTION OF WORKSHOPS GUTTED. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, November 11. The upper storey of the pram department in the workshops of Messrs J. and W. Faulkner’s premises in Castle street was gutted by fire about 5 o’clock this morning. The Fire Brigade was summoned at 5.16 but before the outbreak was extinguished, considerable damage had been done. A huge quantity of metal was completely ruined by fire. Valuable coppered steel wire that cannot be replaced, and a large stock of brassware were rendered useless. The whole upper floor was reduced to a tangled mass of wreckage and practically nothing was saved. The stock on the ground floor was considerably damaged by water. In one place 25 tons of bright steel bars were covered with water and these will all have to be cleaned and dried immediately. The fire was fortunately confined to one department, and no other part of the building was damaged. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was insured for £l5OO, stock for £2500, and machinery for £2OO, all in the Royal Exchange Assurance Company.
