GORE HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors held yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs E. C. Smith, S. Rice, W. Gee, Hugh Smith, C. Bennet and C. D. McConnell. Correspondence. The Education Department advised that the board’s technical classes for the current year would be recognized in accordance with the regulations.—Received. The Education Department wrote acknowledging receipt of applications for the payment of part time teacher hour capitation and incidental allowance in respect of evening technical classes held at Gore during the current year. With regard to the claim for incidental allowances attention was drawn to the fact that these allowances were not payable on the amount paid to the supervisor from incidental allowances.— Received. The Director of Education wrote in connection with the board’s application for subsidy on a donation of £25 received from the Gore Borough Council for the purchase of two typewriters and additional carpentry tools for the evening technical classes at Gore, and advised that the subsidy had been approved.—Received. Rector’s Report. The rector reported that since the last meeting of the board the attendance at the school had considerably improved, although there was still a good deal of minor sickness. On Friday, October 26, at the invitation of Mr. E. Beatson, dairy instructor, he took a number of boys up to the Gore dairy factory where Mr. Beatson explained to them the various processes in the manufacture of butter. He understood from Mr. Beatson that Mr. R. B. Tennant, Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, intended conferring with him in connection with practical instruction in agriculture for boys at the school. The report was approved. Mr. T. Fyfe, a member of the school staff, waited upon the board in connection with the proposal to erect a miniature rifle range in the school grounds and requesting that the board give its consent to the proposal.—The board decided to refer the matter to the Education Department to obtain legal opinion in regard to the board’s liability or otherwise.
