DISTRICT NEWS

WENDON AND WENDONSIDE. All fears of a bad season seem to have been dissipated owing to the marked improvement in the state of the weather. The week has been one of wind and sunshine, particularly sunshine. This year a coal mine has been opened up in the Wendon district, and the mineowner, Mr Radford, is reported to be getting rid of a fairly large quantity of lignite. A coal mine in the district should be profitable, since coal has to be railed from outeide districts. A start has been made on the Wendon Hall, which will stand on Mr R. Stevenson’s property and will be adjacent to the Wendon Presbyterian Church. The funda<tions have been laid and the hall should be completed before Christmas. On Wednesday night Wendon was visited by a wind of the hurricane variety, causing lofty pines on Mr J. Stevenson’s farm, “Ruslands,” to fall across the electric wires, thus stopping the current for about 10 hours. The roof of Mr A. Dickson’s cowbyre was blown on to his house by a strong gust. Influenza is still prevalent in both districts, owing to the changeable nature of the weather. Miss N. Monaghan, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Monaghan, of Wendon, was married recently to Mr Graham, of Studholme. The happy couple have taken up residence at Studholme. At the Kelso show a Wendon boy, in the person of Master L. Jones, received several prizes with his ponies, and further distinguished himself by annexing the prize for the best boy rider. Owners of wireless sets are making their preparations ahead, and there will be many private little parties on election night, which is being eagerly looked forward to. As the Mossburn tennis court was in an unfit condition for playing, the Mossburn players motored over to Wendonside to meet the local B team. Rain came on after a few sets had been played, causing the match to be suspended. A few of the younger members of the teams adjourned to the hall, where dancing was indulged in. The following are the scores, the Wendonside players being mentioned first:— Combined Doubles.—Miss M. Paterson and Samson 6 v. Miss Turner and Crosbie 4; Miss R. Cameron and W. Collins 1 v. Miss Dore and H. Dore 6; Miss Lawrence and J. C. Paterson 2 v. Miss Reid and C. Dore 6; Miss G. McKinnel and D. Paterson 2 v. Miss Young and Mr Wilson. Men’s Doubles.—Samson and Collins 6 v. Crosbie and C. Dore 3; D. Paterson and J. C. Paterson 5 v. H. Dore and Mr Wilson 6. Ladies’ Doubles.—Misses Paterson and Cameron 4 v. Misses Turner and Dore 6; Misses C. Lawrence and G. McKinnel 3 v. Misses Young and Reid 6.
