TO HELP THE BLIND
BAND ON TOUR. GORE VISIT PENDING. The work of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind is fairly well known. It may not be so well known, however, that the Institute has organized a boys’ band. In a letter to Mr E. C. Smith (Gore), Mr Clutha Mackenzie says that 18 months ago the boys knew nothing of band instruments, so, with the object of showing the many friends of the institute just how well the boys have come on, and incidentally to raise some money for the work of the institute, the band is to be taken on tour to give a series of concerts. He suggested November 27 as a suitable date for a visit to Gore, and asked that arrangements be made at this end if it was deemed advisable that the band should stop at Gore. A meeting was held in connection with this proposal on Thursday night, and was attended by Messrs E. C. Smith, Inglis W. Todd (conveners), J. McK. Miller, J. Hunter, M.A., A. J. Campbell, A. S. Fleming, E. McDowall, G. W. Whittingham, W. D. Shelton, C. S. Selby, and G. F. Mirams. After Mr Smith had explained what was wanted and that the theatre was available, it was agreed on the motion of Messrs Fleming and Campbell that arrangements be made for a' concert at Gore, and that all the assistance necessary should be given. The arranging of any item required for the programme was left to Mr Inglis W. Todd, and Mr W. D. Shelton was appointed secretary. The billeting of the boys was arranged in the room. The meeting agreed to ask the Mayor to accord the band a cjvic reception on arrival.
