FOOD SCARCE

SUFFERING IN RUSSIA. POSITION MOST ACUTE. Riga, October 31. “Senseless queues” is the Soviet Press description of women and children who were waiting at Leningrad and elsewhere before dawn to get flour, only to be offered turnips and apples. Nevertheless, the Press admits that the people in the queues have been waiting a whole week, which hardly tallies with the daily official assurances that there was enough for everybody. Other reports show that the position is most acute, and confirm the Ukraine sufferings reported early in October.—Australian Press Association.
