SUNKEN SUBMARINE
DEFECT IN CONSTRUCTION. COMMANDER’S LAST LETTER. Paris, October 15. The commander of the submarine Ondine had a premonition of disaster as three hours before the submarine left Cherbourg on its last voyage he wrote to his parents: “I embrace you for the last time. Something tells me I shall not return.” In addition to blaming the captain of the Ekaterina the newspapers state that the Ondine was a model which was shown to be defective and should not have been sent out on a long cruise without a surface boat as an escort. Naval circles are surprised that none of the crew on deck was able to struggle to the surface. French torpedo boats are still searching for traces of the lost submarine. There were harrowing scenes at Cherbourg and Rouen when the loss of all hands was reported, relatives and wives thronging the naval offices for news.—Australian Press Association.
