SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Acceptances for the first day of the Gore R.C.’s Spring meeting close 5 p.m. to-day. The Auckland Trotting Club’s Spring meeting concludes at Alexandra Park this afternoon. The second day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s Spring fixture is due at Caulfield to-day. The locally-trained youngster. The Graphic, was kicked at Wingatui, but has made a good recoven'. The Victorian crack three-year-old, Mollison. is apparently still sore, as he was only cantering yesterday. The Cattle Flat Hack Racing Club will provide the goodly sum of £175 in stake money on December 27. Those who know him best as a worker on the Hastings track expect Star Stranger to be ready for the N.Z. Cup. The New Zealand Caulfield Cup hope, Hynanna, has been galloping well on the Caulfield training tracks. The Gimcrack Stakes (fillies), decided at Randwick recently by two-year-olds, was worth £2227 to Malvina, the winner. The Wingatui mare, Miss Winkie, broke down when racing at the Kurow meeting and will visit imported Rosenor. At the V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield today great interest will be taken in the Mona Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds. When produced for the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, Jack-a Dandy raced greenly, but displayed a dash of speed. The Christchurch light harness mentor, J. H. Wilson, is likely to become private trainer to Messrs W. and C. Johnstone, of Auckland. If recent racing can be taken as a guide. Prince Humphrey will find Balmerino hard to beat in the Victoria Racing Club Derby. By a costly imported sire (Wrack) from Trix Pointer (imp., and N.Z. Trotting Cup winner . Great Northern Trotting Derby hero, Wrackler, is bred in the purple. Quite a number of southern people were looking for King Pointer on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s -Spring meeting on Monday, but he did not start. During the two days of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring meeting Mr A. D. Me Ivor was successful with his starts in each of the sixteen races on the cards. Riccarton horseman, C. Emerson, will probably pilot Aspiring in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, while local jockey A. E. Didham will ride Silver Paper in N.Z. Derby. The substitution of P. Powell for F. Voight as rider of Set Sail on Saturday evidently caused the Gore-owned mare to be heavily supported in Christchurch and Wellington. The Cattle Flat Hack R.C.’s thirty-second annual fixture at Balfour on December 27 promises to provide seven events and a very nice programme for a non-totalisator meeting. The admirers of Count Cavour and Footfall for the New Zealand Cup had every reason to be pleased with the performances of the pair at the Dunedin J.C. Spring meeting last week. It is reported that when the three-year-old filly, Prickles, met with trouble in the Mosgiel Handicap at Wingatui last week, she sustained injuries which may spoil her Oaks Stakes chance.. The Invercargill horseman, A. Youngman, travelled to Riversdale during the week-end to school Tunamoe over the battens. The Balboa gelding, who fenced well, will be piloted by Youngman in the Gore R.C. leaping events. The outside of the Southland Racing Club’s course proper was available for fast work yesterday morning, and quite a number of useful tasks were recorded, but the times in the various tryouts were slow and unconvincing. C. Emerson, who steered Aspiring to victory on Thursday last, has won the McLean Stakes at Wingatui on six occasions, while he has yet to succeed in the Dunedin Guineas, in which he has been six times on the second horse. The ex-local mentor, J. W. Pankhurst, has arrived here from South Canterbury in charge of four horses, and will probably remain in Invercargill until after the Winton Jockey Club’s annual fixture. His team includes two promising fillies recently raced at the D.J.C. Spring meeting. Full Flight, by Archery—Satisfaction, and Night Maid, by Night Raid—Moiselle. The former, who will probably grow into a commanding mare, greatly resembles her dam (Satisfaction) in many respects. Of the pair, who race in Mr G. A. Kain’s colours, Night Maid, moves very freely and may presently season into a smart racer. A third member of the party is the well-known sprinting mare Receipt, by Paper Money—Satisfaction, who has not been up very long. When she came under the control of the ex Invercargill trainer Receipt was very much run down in condition, and sported two badly injured hind limbs, but she is picking up again in a satisfactory fashion and it was noticeable when she raced at Wingatui last week that she still retained a dash of pace, despite recent physical troubles and her ranking as a six year-old galloper. Statistics compiled in connection with the Dunedin Jockey Club's recent Spring meeting disclose the leading stake winners as follows Winning owners: J. Faulks £1050; J. M. Samson, £400; R. Miller, £350; J. A. Ainge, £250; Dr J. E. Rogers, £215 - Sir George Clifford, £lBO, H. Divers, £l9O. Leading sires: Paper Money, £1325;’ Some Boy IL, £440; Night Raid, £350; Boniform, £350; Solferino, £240 : Archery, £220; Saxby, £200; Tractor, £175; Gay Lad. £165. The sum of £lO5O credited to Mr J. Faulks, of Pembroke, represents the stake money secured by Silver Paper and his half-sister, Aspiring, who accounted for the two coveted classic events of the fixture under review. It is reported that L. G. Morris will ride Royal Flyer, Mandane and Commendation on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Clubs Spring meeting on Saturday; B. H. Morris will pilot Mask, Historic, Push, Partaga, Panther, Ceremony and either Benzora or Bright Glow; R. J. Mackie will ride Royal Game, Moutoa, Admiral Drake and Billion. It is reported that the In vercargill-trained mare. Celerity IL, has been scratched for the Harcourt Cup at the Wellington R.C’s. Spring meeting. The English mare may be given a race at the Gore R.C. Spring meeting and take part in the Birchwood Hunt fixture, with a trip to Riccarton to follow to race at the CJ.C. Spring gathering, but a definite programme has yet to be mapped out for the descendant of Gainsborough. On the extreme outside of the Southland Racing Club’s course proper yesterday morning Celerity 11. and Spean Bridge were associated in a six-furlong gallop. The track was slow when the stable companions ran the first half-mile in 56secs and the full distance in Imin 25 2-ssecs. The pair finished almost on terms, but Celerity 11. displayed zest in her effort and this must have been pleasing to J.. A. Rowland, who would probably not worry over the time recorded on dead ground. It appears that when Rillet fell with him at the Masterton R.C. meeting on Saturday last T. Green had one of his elbows

injured. Green is in trouble physically at present with a twisted knee and an injured elbow, the after-effects of two falls, and this fact will handicap him to a certain extent in his engagements at the Wellington R.Cs. Spring meeting opening on Saturday. Jockey T. Metcalf, who is in great demand in the North Island at present, will steer Tobaccoland, Chelone, Mendip, Black Mint and Helotis on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Spring meeting on Saturday. In view of the fact that the southern-bred juvenile, Silver Paper, has been handicapped to carry 8.4 in a strong field in the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, it is interesting to note the weights borne by three-year-olds whose names appear on the list as winners of this important Riccarton sprint event:—Cianranald (1891), 8.5; Stepniak (18921, 7.10; Golden Fleece (1894>, 7.4; Pampero (19001, 7.4; Royal Artillery (1901 >, 7.10; Vladimir (1902 1,7.8 J; Machine Gun (1903), 8.9, Gold Crest (1907), 8.3; Bon Reve and Stardancer dead-heat (1912), 8.6 and 6.7 respectively; Warstep (1913), 6.13*; Eulalie (1927), 8.1. It will therefore be seen that Machine Gun (8.9), Bon Reve (8.6) and Clanranald (8.5) are the only three-year-olds to win with more weight than has been allotted Silver Paper, a fact which leads to the opinion that Mr J. E. Henrys as weight adjuster classes W. M. Stone’s pupil as a juvenile of the very best class. It may also be observed that Childsplay, who was conceding the southern-owned galloper 71b in the Electric Handicap which he won at the D.J.C. meeting last week, is now in receipt of 71b from the Paper Money —Silver Peak gelding. If there is all that is claimed for it in mere weight in handicap racing Silver Paper will have a severe ta*k set him in the Stewards’ Handicap, while Childsplay is very well treated at 7.11. According to Hawkes Bay reports, Beacon Light is going along satisfactorily in his track work. So far nothing of an exacting nature has been required from him, but it is hoped that he will stand up to his preparation for the New Zealand Cup. On two previous occasions, however, he has gone wrong on the eve of the race. The threq year-old filly Endorse, by Paper Money from Epitaph (reports The Dominion), has arrived at Trentham from Ellerslie, looking in great order to commence a preparation. She was accompanied by the imported filly Sunkiss, by Sunstar from Kiss Cannon, by Gay Crusader. She is to be raced on lease from Mr I. G. Duncan by Captain B. H. Edkins, the owner of Endorse. H. Telford has also received from Sydney the two-year-old filly, Becky Sharp (Absurd —Blackmail). She is another who will carry the same colours as Endorse and Sunkiss, and in Sydney she was in charge of R. D. O’Donnell. In commenting on the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring meeting on Saturday, Christchurch Star remarks:—“The Southland three-year-old, Rin Tin Tin, ran a good race in the Shorts Handicap and only failed in the last fifty yards, it was an attractive performance, and he will be a lot better next time he starts, as he had not raced since Easter. He is a brilliant little galloper who may win a big sprint under a light weight. Lucy Locket repeated her first day’s form, when she won the Telegraph Handicap. She was a trifle lucky at the start, and was in front all the way. She is very well at present, and further successes are certain. Longer journeys than a mile should be no trouble to her, as she is bred on staying lines, being by Boniform from a Kilbroney mare.” Silver Paper (says The Lyttelton Times) must be given credit for a brilliant performance in the Dunedin Guineas. He was ridden a very confident race and up to three furlongs from home he was at the tail of the field. He was giving away several lengths at this stage, but when he started his run he moved up very quickly, joining Childsplay at the entrance to the straight. There seemed a prospect of a good finish, but 3 furlong from the post Silver Paper looked a winner. Childsplay battled on gamely, but Silver Paper beat her decisively by three-quarters of a length. These two outclassed the opposition. Silver Paper ran the mile out so solidly that it is reasonable to expect him to run out the Derby distance. —Childsplay showed her usual brilliancy in the early stages of the Dunedin Guineas and she was soon bowling along in front, apparently going quite easily. She continued like this to the straight, but she failed to respond when required to make an effort in the straight. She was not disgraced by her defeat, as the winner, Silver Paper, looks a high grade gelding. It -is probable, however, that Childsplay will always be seen at her best in sprint races, where her speed can be utilized. WAVERLEY RACINB CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR MONDAY. STARTING FIASCOS. THE ELLERSLIE TROUBLE. PROTECTION AGAINST RECURRENCE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, October 16. In view of the recent starting fiascos at Ellerslie, the committee of the Auckland Racing Club has decided that at future meetings a special mounted official should be employed with a flag stationed some distance in front of the starter who on receiving a flag signal from the starter that the race has not been officially started will be k in a position to recall the field.

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. The following are the acceptances for the second day (Wednesday) of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Spring meeting:— GREEN LANE TROT HANDICAP (harness), £3OO. Limit 3.42. One and a-half miles.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED. (Special to the Times.) Auckland October 16. Prospects are brighter for the concluding day’s sport of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Spring fixture and warm sunshine should serve to dry up the track after the rain that fell last nigiir. The acceptances are good generally although in three events the field will be small. Yesterday all races were put back 20 minutes on account of daylight saving to quote the official explanation but further putting back of the clock has been ordered for to-morrow. The first event, the Greenlane Trot 12.15 p.m.), will see Etta Cole again in action. She has been penalized three seconds for her win by a head only but it looked as if she could have won quite easily. Apparently the handicapper too, holds this view. Bright Light was a possibility at the home turn yesterday and both he and Etta Cole should be all the better for their outing. Laplander was a bit unlucky the first day, being asked to cover a lot of extra ground. He reads well in the Newmarket Handicap (one o’clock) and a newcomer in Great Peter may provide some opposition. Eleven figure in the big Alexandra Handicap (1.50 p.m.). Jackie Audubon has gone back a second for his sprint win. In the Spring Handicap yesterday he was driven a bad race, being hemmed in on the rails and he could not get out till too late. He registered a briliant performance in the sprint later in the day and on that showing must have a great chance of going one better to-morrow. Western King was asked to do a lot yesterday and more judiciously handled might have been closer up than sixth; The latter will be bracketed as usual with Jewel Pointer. Pageant w’on so nicely on the first day that he is going to take some stopping in the Junction Handicap (2.35). He did not receive a good run over the last couple of furlongs but even then he was good enough to win though Taipare registered a sterling performance in the final event yesterday and may be Pageant’s most dangerous opponent. Trotters have another chance in the Hillsborough Handicap (3.10) which is a six horse contest. Tiger Salve went an honest race when he won the first day and the penalty may not stop him this time. Young Blake may keep his feet and should he do so will be difficult. If Jackie Audubon has no penalty in the Campbell Handicap (4.9) he should again be favourite for be is in brilliant form. Kohara is engaged in this race in preference to the big contest and it should be a rare tussle between this pair with Jewel Pointer going a fine race despite his being so far back. Wrackler accomplished a splendid performance in the Derby yesterday and that effort may see him at the head of quotations in the Remuera Handicap 4.50). A new comer in The Abbey is very forward and then there is Sunfish who went a good race the first day under difficulties. Sunfish and Wrackler may command most attention. The meeting concludes with the Insulation Handicap (5.40). Several of the dangerous candidates are previously engaged. Free Advice is to have her only run of the day in this event and judging by the manner in which she scored on the opening day, must again be difficult to head off. Of the remainder, Pageant and Taipare will not be neglected although a penalty for either will make them face a formidable task. MELBOURNE TRAINING NOTES. SMART GALLOPS AT FLEMINGTON. A TRAINER FOUND DROWNED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, October 16. At Flemington to-day the gallops were” accomplished on good going on the outside of the course proper. Oatendale and Valparaiso galloped a mile and a-quarter in 2min 22£secs finishing together. Alfred the Great was extended over five furlongs, covering the distance in Imin 4secs. Statesman and Bacchus were associated over a mile and a-quarter in 2min 20secs., covering the last five furlongs in Imin 3| secs. Both galloped well. The three-year-old Yodelist, with A. Wilson up, beat Epilogue, carrying R. Lewis in the saddle, over a mile and a-half, taking 2min 431 secs. Horoscope, assisted by Dark Dawn, did half a mile in 50secs easily. The Happy Warrior beat Leading Light over a mile in Imin 47secs. Murnini did four furlongs on the grass in 504 secs. Headmore covered three furlongs on the tan in 39secs. King of Revelry ran the best five furlongs of the morning, on the tan, covering the distance in Imin 3£secs. The well-known trainer, Alf. Mortimer, was found drowned at St. Kilda. W. Elliott will ride The Happy Warrior ,in the Caulfield Cup.

Pedro . . . . scr WINTON JOCKEY CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. DATES CHANGED. On Thursday evening (says the Winton Record), Mr T. Hamilton (president) presided over a good attendance of members of committee. Throe tenders were received for concrete work at the stewards’ stand, and the lowest, that of H. S. Woodnorth (£l3) was accepted. Two tenders were received for painting the totalisator house and that of G. Lindsay’s, £23 10/- ; (the lowest) was accepted. It decided to engage Mrs McArthur’s Orchestra for the music on both race days. It was decided to permit, at the discretion of the president, the working of horses on the outside of track proper. As the General Election has been fixed for the opening day of the Summer Meeting (November 14), full and careful consideration was given to the question of other dates. This caused some perplexity, but it was eventually decided to apply for November 16 and 17 (Friday and Saturday). These dates have been subsequently granted. TENNIS. INTER-CLUB MATCHES. DRAW FOR VARIOUS COMPETITIONS. The executive of the Southland Lawn Tennis Association met last evening to make the draw for the various inter-club competitions. For the Saturday A grade eight entries were received, as against seven last year, Bluff being the new team. The Saturday B grade competition drew no fewer than ten teams, as against five last year. There were only four entries for the Wednesday competition. Owing to the large number of entries in the Saturday B grade competition the executive decided to make the draw for only the first four rounds, after which some of the teams with fewest points will be eliminated. The draw is as follows: SATURDAY MATCHES. —A Grade.— October 27.—Invercargill v. Winton, at Winton; Southend v. St. Mary’s, at Southend; Waihopai v. Gladstone, at Gladstone; Central v. RUGBY FOOTBALL. FUTURE AUSTRALIAN TOURS. Sydney, October 18. The New South Wales Rugby Union Council accepted the agreement arranged by the chairman, Mr Martin, with the New Zealand Rugby Union under which all future visits will be Australian in character. The programmes will be restricted to eight matches. New Zealand visits Australia in 1929 and 1932 and Australia returns in 1931 and 1936. There will be no interchange in 1930 because a Britsh team is visiting both countries. At least one match during New Zealand’s visits here will be against an Australian side. —Australian Press Association. CRICKET. INTEREST BY WOMEN. Christchurch, October 16. Mention is made in the annual report of the New Zealand Cricket Council of an increase of interest by women in the great summer game, while the outstanding performance of Miss Jean Kerr, of Marton, who last season in a match in that centre scored 144 runs herself out of a total of 181, and then proceeded to take ten wickets was worthy of special mention. The council offers its congratulations to Miss Kerr on her achievement.
