HERD TESTING
MATAURA ISLAND ASSOCIATION. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Mataura Island Herd Testing Association was held on Monday evening. Mr J. A. Graham presided over a fair attendance of subscribers. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman referred to the success of last season and to the small cost of running the association, namely, 3/per cow, for all old members and 3/6 per cow for new members. He thought that this cost was probably the lowest in the Dominion. In further remarks the chairman stressed the importance of herd testing and hoped that the association would have successful support this season. The motion for adoption was seconded by Mr F. R. Christie and carried unanimously. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year: Messrs J. A. Graham (chairman), D. C. Livingston, A. W. Christie, R. S. Graham, A. Simpson and F. R. Christie. Owing to Mr Christie resigning the position of official tester the position was declared vacant. Mr W. Aitken, Wyndham, was appointed from two applications. The replies from dairymen who intended testing was considered very satisfactory, and the official tester was instructed to begin his work on Wednesday. With regard to the Government subsidy for this season the matter was fully discussed, after which the secretary was instructed to write to the dairy division for further particulars. The chairman in moving a vote of thanks to the late official tester, Mr F. R. Christie, and to the secretary, Mr G. J. C. Smart, mentioned the very satisfactory work that had been carried out by these two officials.—The motion was carried with applause. To bring the association up to its full strength it was decided that Mr Christie, the tester and the secretary interview likely subscribers.
