RAILWAY SMASH

’ DISASTER IN INDIA TRUE POSITION NOT DISCLOSED ASTONISHING ALLEGATIONS BY EYE-WITNESSES (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph-Copyright.) Delhi, July 13. There is intense indignation among Europeans over the publication in the chief Nationalist newspaper, Forward, of letters by eye-witnesses alleging that the true death roll in the railway smash has been deliberately concealed. “The dead and wounded,” it is stated, “were treated worse than dogs by the relief train party. The wounded were searched and killed. Where a cry arose from the wreckage a European came with a light, then there was the sound of heavy blows and the voice ceased.” The writer offers to prove that the dead numbered more than 300 instead of 20, as reported. He says the dying were despatched with rods. Many dead and wounded were conveyed to an unknown destination. —Australian Press Association. A message from Calcutta on July 9 stated: The most serious accident of recent years on the East India railways occurred last night eight miles outside of Howrah. Already 18 are dead and 32 injured. The cause Was the derailment of an engine near a culvert resulting in a front brake van and two passenger carriages being telescoped. The locality is within the strike area. The theory that it is the work of strikers is being examined.
