BASKETBALL
SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Weather conditions for basketball on Saturday were more satisfactory than they have been for some time and some good play was witnessed. The results are as follows:—? SENIOR. MAKAREWA (8) v. COLLEGIATE (3). The game began badly, and play during most of the time was uninteresting. Collegiate arrived late and then had to playone short in the centre third, fortunately only for three minutes. Makarewa played for ten minutes, one short , in the shooting third. D. Dennis (Makarewa) secured the ball at the first throw up and passed to goal. M. Wright attempted to score, but was unsuccessful, and play returned to the centre, where M. Greenwood securing, passed to D. Deegan who passed to M. Humphries. There was no score, and Mrs Mortimer securing passed to D. Dennis. Play returned to Makarewa goal, where M. Wright scored. Makarewa secured the ball from Collegiate players in the centre and passed to the goal. E. Hughes (Collegiate) intercepted a pass from M. Wright and the ball went from this player to L. Strathern, D. Deegan, E. Botherway and M. Humphreys, who scored. Makarewa 1, Collegiate 1. From the centre throw up, play passed to Makarewa’s goal third, but no goal was scored, and the ball went out of play. From the throw-in, Makarewa shoots secured, but their attempts at goal were unsuccessful, and Collegiate defences securing, passed to the centre. Here M. Greenwood secured the ball and passed to M. Humphrey and R. McGill who scored. Play returned to the Makarewa goal but there was no score, and K. Maloney catching the ball from the throw in passed to D. Deegan, M. Greenwood, E. Botherway and R. McGill who scored again. Collegiate (3), Makarewa (1). From the centre, play went to the Makarewa goal, but V. Cloughley intervened and passed tn E. Hughes. From this player the ball went to L. Strathern, D. Deegan and M. Humphrey who attempted to score. The ball went out of play and C. Glennie, obtaining from the throw-in passed to Mrs Mortimer, D. Dennis, R. Spencer, M. Wright and N. Beer who scored. The half time whistle blew soon after, leaving the score Collegiate (3), Makarewa (2). In the second half, play went first to Collegiate goal, but no score was made and Makarewa defence sent the ball to the centre where D. Dennis secured. This player sent the ball to R. Spencer, R. Waldron, N. Beer and M. Wright who scored. When play again returned to the Makarewa goal, L. Ward scored from a pass from N. Beer. The ball passed from goal to goal, the good defence work of both teams preventing the shoote from scoring. Finally D. Dennis obtained the ball in the centre and passed to R. Spencer who passed to M. Wright and N. Beer, the latter scoring. D. Deegan secured the ball from the throw up at the centre and passed to L. Strathern. From this player, the ball went to R. McGill and M. Humphries who attempted to score but the ball went out of play. From the throw in, Makarewa defences secured, and play was transferred to the centre, and then to Makarewa goal. Collegiate defence intervened, but their efforts to return the ball to the centre were unavailing, and M. Wright securing scored a good goal. By a series of passes from the centre, the ball was returned to the Makarewa shooting third where M. Wright scored another goal for her team. Shortly afterwards N. Beer secured from a pass from M. Wright and scored the final goal of the game. Makarewa (8), Collegiate (3).
RATA (8) v. PIRATES (6). The teams in this match were very evenly matched, and the game from beginning to end was full of interest. L. Lawrence and A. Jones were both unable to play for Pirates. This team has a new centre player R. Sievwright, who put up a good performance, while A. Roberts again displayed her ability in the centre third. E. McKenzie who usually plays defence was changed to the shooting third, and her original place was taken by R. McKenzie. From the first throw up the ball passed to Pirates goal where M. Williamson scored. For a few minutes play was uneventful until M. Royds secured the ball and passed to I. McDonald, whose pass to B. Wall resulted in a goal. From the next throw up E. Kensington secured and passed to M. Royds. Both teams were awarded unguarded passes before the ball had left the centre third. 'Eventually play was transferred to the Rata goal, but no score resulted, and Pirates defence returned the ball to the centre. From this third it was passed to Pirates goal where it went out of play. From the throw in M. Williamson secured and passed to F. Todd who ecored. From the next throw up, the ball went to Rata goal where S. Murdoch scored. Rata (2), Pirates (2). From good centre play, the ball was passed to Pirates goal, but M. Shand (Rata) intervened and passed to M. Royds who passed to M. Basstian, I. McDonald, S. Murdoch and B. Wall who scored. G. Kensington secured from the next throw up but her pass to M. Royds was intercepted by A. Roberts, who passed to Pirates goal. G. Basstian secured and play passed to the centre and Rata goal third. Pirates defence secured the ball and L. McGregor passed to A. Roberts, L. Purdue, R. Seivwright and M. Williamson who scored. Rata secured in the centre and the ball was passed to the goal where B. Wall scored. When the half time whistle blew, the score was (Rata (4) Pirates (3). From the first throw up in the second half, Rata secured and the ball was sent to goal. L. McGregor saved and passed to M. Summers. From this player the ball went to R. Sievwright, A. Roberts, M. Williamson and F. Todd, who scored. Play returned from the next throw up, to Pirates goal but Rata defence secured the ball and G. Basstian passed to E. McCurdy. From this player the ball went to M. Royds, G. Kensington, B. Wall and I. McDonald who scored Rata (5) Pirates (4). From the centre, play was transferred to the Pirates goal, where F. Todd scored from a pass from M. Williamson. Pirates obtained the ball at the throw up, but M. Royds intercepted and passed to B. Wall who was unable to score and the ball went out. From the throw in, I. McDonald secured and passed to S. Murdoch, who scored. After a few minutes play, B. Wall also scored for Rata. From the next throw up, play went to Pirates goal, where F. Todd scored. Rata secured the ball at the next throw up and G. Kensington attempted to pass to goal, but A. Roberts intervened, and the ball was passed to Pirates shoots. No goal resulted, and M. Shand securing passed to the centre where M. Royds obtained and passed to goal. The ball went out of play, but S. Murdoch obtained from the throw in and passed to I. McDonald and B. Wall who scored. When the final whistle blew the score was Rata (8), Pirates (6). BLUFF (19) v. St. MARY’S (3). INTERMEDIATE. MAKAREWA (6) v. ST . PETER’S (3). This was a good game for Intermediate and quite interesting to watch. St. Peter’s put up a good fight but Makarewa proved the stronger team. There was a noticeable absence of scrambling and bunching on the ball. ROSEDALE (8) v. COLLEGIATE (4). Rosedale were fortunate in defeating Collegiate, which has proved itself a sound team. Rosedale, on the whole, played a faster game than their opponents. FIXTURES. The following fixtures have been arranged : WEDNESDAY, JULY 18. Senior: At 2 p.m. (referee Mrs Torrance) Collegiate v. Intermediate: At 2 p.m. (referee Miss Hamilton) Collegiate v. Progressive; 2.45 p.m. (referee Mr. Dennis) St. Peter’s v. ’Kiwi; 3.30 p.m. (referee Miss Bailey) Central Methodist v. St. Mary's; 4.15 p.m. (referee Mrs Batchelor) Pirates v. Rata. Owing to the curtain raiser at Rugby Park on Saturday 21st, and the Otago v. Southland match at Waihopai School on Saturday, July 28, there will be no Saturday competition for two weeks. SECONDARY SCHOOLS. A meeting of the executive of the Secondary Schools Basketball Association was. held on Thursday last. Mr. C. A. Stewart presided. A letter was received from the Southland Basketball Association concerning a match to be played as a curtain-raiser to the Otago-Southland match on July 28. It was decided that a team representing the best secondary school players be provided to play Collegiate Intermediate on that date. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of thanks to Miss Samuel for a donation forwarded. The meeting then discussed a protest from Technical College senior B captain in connection with wrong scoring in the match versus High School B, played on July 4. It was decided, on the motion of Miss Macindoe, seconded by Miss Fitzgerald, that the protest be withdrawn. It was announced that the first round of the senior grade was completed, the leading team being Technical College A.
