HOSPITAL BOARDS

LEVY ON LOCAL BODIES, A CHANGE NOT WARRANTED. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, July 12. Although some small amendments to the Hospitals Act are expected to be made by Parliament this year to meet representations by the Hospital Boards Association, it is stated definitely that the Bill will not deal with the manner in which the hospital boards levy the local bodies in their districts for their finance. The present system has the endorsement of the Royal Commission which inquired into the matter exhaustively a few years ago and it is the view of those in authority that nothing has been advanced since to warrant a change being made. It is true that recently there has been some suggestion that the greater part if not the whole of the financial requirements of the hospital boards should be provided by the State agreement. Such a suggestion would possibly involve very far reaching changes in the system of hospital administration. If the State is to provide all the finance, it would be essential that it should have a more direct voice in the spending of the funds and this would mean in all probability not only a severe curtailment of the functions of the existing boards but possibly a drastic act in the number of hospital districts.
