ACROSS THE ICE
PARTY FROM ITALIA TRAMPERS LOCATED BY AIRMAN LANDING PLACE SOUGHT (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Moscow, July 11. The Russian airman, Chuknovsky, has located Professor Malgrem’s walking party. Chuknovsky left the icebreaker Krassin reconnoitring and saw them 20 miles from the ship. He circled over them and two walkers energetically waved a flag. The other lay on the ground. The airman is searching for a landing place.—Australian Press Association. THE OFFICIAL VERSION. PROSPECTS OF RESCUE. (Rec. 10.55 p.m.) Rome, July 12. It is officially stated that with the return of normal magnetic conditions the Citta di Milano has restored wireless communication with Viglieri who is now 80 degrees 29 minutes north and 28 degrees 40 minutes east. The Citta di Milano also heard by wireless from Crass in that Chuknovsky on Tuesday, when returning from a patrol flight lasting four hours, along North east Land, saw three men on an icefloe, one waving a flag and another lying down. Chuknovsky tried to land and take off Professor Malgrem, but failed to find a landing place so he decided to return to the Krassin and arrange a rescue. A bank of fog suddenly formed and prevented the Russian airman finding the Krassin so he made for the coast. He landed near Cape Flatten, but in doing so damaged his plane. However, the five men aboard are safe and have provisions sufficient for a fortnight. The Krassin in the meantime is making towards Malgrem who is estimated to be twelve miles from the Russian base ship, Viglieri being 42 miles from the same point. It is hoped that the Krassin will reach Malgrem by mid-day on Thursday.—Australian Press Association—United Service. ANOTHER ATTEMPT. (Rec. 12.55 a.m.l Virgo Bay, July 12. After refuelling Chuknovsky again departed in an attempt to rescue the marooned men.—Australian Press Association. Three of the Italia’s party (Professor Malgrem and Commandants Mariano and Zappi) started out from the camp some time before General Nobile was rescued to try to reach North Cape, on North-east land, in search of aid.
