LANDS SETTLEMENT
GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE DEFINED. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, July 11. The Auckland Winter Exhibition opened to-day. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, was present. Explaining the diffidence shown by the Government toward ambitious schemes of land settlement for development, the Minister stated that while he fully recognized a great deal more country was awaiting development, the Government had to be cautious. The best interests of men already on land would suffer by more concentration on unoccupied lands. The first essential was to keep there those men already on the land and establish their position. He referred to the success of small farming such as fruit-growing, stating that last year apples exported from the Dominion were worth £500,000. The Government now proposed to subsidize the poultry industry by a subsidy on the export of eggs and the same would be done with the pig industry in the export of pork.
