MANGAN CUP. RANGERS AND INVERCARGILL DRAW. The first round of the Mangan Cup was played on the showgrounds on Saturday under bad weather conditions. The ground was heavy and intermittent showers made things unpleasant for players and onlookers alike. Rangers drew with Invercargill, two goals being registered on each side, and Corinthians defeated Central by 7 goals to 0. The second round of the Schools Competition were also decided between Waihopai and South, Middle and North. The results of the day’s play in the senior competitions put Corinthians in the lead with two points to their credit and gave Invercargill and Rangers one point each, following on their draw. The latter team put up a fine display and their draw with Invercargill was a surprise, though on their afternoon’s play they should have won. Corinthians played a fast and clever game and their victory over Central was never in doubt from the beginning of the match. RANGERS v. INVERCARGILL. Both sides showed a change in the position of men and Invercargill played a man short. The teams lined out as follows: Rangers (Black and White)—Anderson, Maxwell, A. Robinson, Williamson, Batchelor, McKay, Rae, Holding, Stirling, Robinson, Doig. Invercargill (Black) —Gosling, Mclntosh, Davies, Campbell, Fitzpatrick, Boylan, Penman, Wilson, Cooke and Bishop. Rangers took the play into Invercargill territory from the kick-off, and kept up the pressure, but the Black and White defence proved too strong and Invercargill swung the play back to Rangers’ goal, where play settled into a series of hard kicks. Stirling, for Rangers, secured possession and with a smart piece of solo work carried the ball into scoring position, his well-timed kick fooling the Invercargill goalie and giving Rangers the first goal. Wilson, for Invercargill, followed up by scoring twice, and Rangers from a nenalty added another one to their score, Maxwell putting in the kick. Play continued solidly, the rain making the concluding stages unpleasant, but the score remained unaltered. Mr W. Reddington was referee. CORINTHIANS DEFEAT CENTRAL. Corinthians defeated Central in the other match for the Mangan Cup, though the former team were playing short. Their weight and experience told, however, and they emerged victorious by 7 goals to nil. The teams lined out as follows: Corinthians (Light Blue) —Mclntyre, J. Dy mock, Officer, Turner, Rudolph, McMillan, W. Dy mock, Nicol. Central (Red and White) —Reiman, Anderson, Luke, D. Milne, Hodgson, W. Milne, Baldwin, Keen, Hunter, Matheson, Butler. From the kick-off play was almost always in Central territory, the Corinthian players proving too weighty and experienced for the newer team. The scorers for Corinthians were—W. Dymock (3), Nicol (2), Officer (1), and Rudolph (1). Mr J. Galbraith was referee. SCHOOL MATCHES. The introduction of school soccer has been productive of enthusiasm and the opening stage of the Schools’ Competition saw four teams turn out, the victors being Middle and South in their respective games, South winning by two goals to one against Waihopai, and Middle defeating North by four goals to nil. Waihopai—Grieve, Bridgeman, Haywood, Couling, Watson, Kingsland, Hamilton, Ryan, Harper, Scammel, Smith.

South—Morrison, Dixon, Taylor, Aitcheson, Lythgoe, J. Hunter, W. Hunter, Patton, Trimm, McKay, Greenhalgh. Dixon and Morrison each goaled for South, while Hamilton scored a splendid goal for Waihopai. Mr J. Dymock was referee.

Middle—Morrison, W. Anderson, Savoury, Bishop, Wood Robb, Johnston, McGregor, Lewis, G. Anderson, McKenzie. North—N. Henderson, -Currie, Robinson, Shand, Botherway, Sadlier, Horr, Haberfield, F. Henderson, Paterson, Fogerty. Middle kept North on the defensive throughout the game. The scorers for the winners were—W. Anderson (2), McKenzie (1), Lewis (1), and Bishop (1). Mr Cook was referee.
