POLICE COURT
MINOR CASES DEALT WITH. In the Police Court yesterday morning, Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M., dealt with several minor cases, both criminal and civil. George Diack, prosecuted by the motor inspector for riding a bicycle at night without a light and without a red prism reflector, was convicted and fined 10/- on the first charge and convicted and discharged on the second. VALUELESS CHEQUES. Nathaniel John Reed, aged 40, was charged that on May 30 and 31, at Riverton, he issued four valueless cheques to the total value of £lB 14/-.
Detective-Sergeant Hewitt, who prosecuted, said that Reed had been employed as a traveller for a local firm and had a cheque-book on the Bank of New South Wales in Gore, the account being in the name of John Reid. These cheques, however, had been signed Reed. Mr Gordon Reed who represented accused, after hastening to state that although he was of the same name, he was in no way connected with his client, said that accused came from a reputable home in Dunedin. As a traveller he had decided on the trip in question to keep a check on his expenses by using cheques although he had plenty of cash with him. The money had been used for hotel and travelling expenses. Accused’s intention had been to pay the £3O which he had with him into the bank as soon as he reached Gore. However, in the meantime, his child in Christchurch fell ill, and he had to send his wife away there with most of the money. He had sent telegrams to the persons to whom he had given the cheques to ask them to defer sending them in for a time. In spite of the fact that accused was already on probation from Christchurch, counsel would ask that he should be given leniency. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt explained that accused had given no trouble and had made a clean breast of the matter.
The Magistrate remarked that this was not the first time accused had been in trouble. He was an experienced man of 40, so it was no youthful folly.
He was remanded in custody until tomorrow for the Probation Officer to make a report.
