MATAURA NEWS

TOWN BAND. (From Our Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Mataura Town Band Committee was held in the bandroom on Tuesday and attended by Messrs J. H. Clark (president), A. J. Grant (secretary), A. and W. Duncan, R. Hutton, J. Russell, L. McKelvie, T. Gaudion J. F. Heslin.

A letter was received from the Mataura Borough Council in reply to the band’s request for an increase in the subsidy stating that the council had decided to increase the amount to £2O. The letter was received and the secretary was instructed to write and thank the council for its favourable consideration of the request. Mr. W. E. Lyons, Invercargill, wrote offering to run a skating rink in aid of the band’s funds on a 50-50 basis of the profits.

After giving full consideration to the matter the opinion was expressed that the financial results from such a venture would be insufficient to warrant running a rink. It was therefore moved by Mr W. Duncan that the scheme be abandoned, and that Mr Lyon be thanked for his offer. This was seconded by Mr J. F. Heslin and carried.

Mr J. F. Heslin brought up the matter of procuring a light in Bridge Street for the purpose of promenade concerts, and he moved that the Borough Council be approached with a request to provide a light. This seconded by Mr W. Duncan and carried. REBEKAH LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Pearl of Mataura Rebekah Lodge was held on Tuesday, Sister M. Mitchell, N.G., presiding over a large attendance of members. One new member was balloted for. After the routine business was put through the lodge adjourned and a dance was held in aid of raising funds for an oddfellows’ benevolent home. Mr W. Buchanan was in charge of the programme and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent. Music for the dancing was supplied by Misses I. McDonald, O. Leitch and Ida Richmond. SALEYARDS COMPANY. The following report and balance-sheet will be submitted to the annual meeting of the shareholders of the Mataura Public Saleyards Company, Limited, on Saturday: During the year approximately 16,851 sheep and 763 head of cattle passed through the yards as compared with 17,020 sheep and 746 cattle the previous year. The yard dues show a slight increase, the amount received from this source being £5B 1/10, as compared with £57 7/1, the previous year. The year started off with a credit balance of £B3 11/4, and finished with a balance of £62 0/10, a very satisfactory result when the improvements carried out during the year are taken into consideration. Owing to heavy yardings at the fall of the year, your directors deemed it advisable to make some provision for effectively handling the large entry, and the sum of £l7 11/5, was expended in hurdles and stakes. Improvements in the way of concreting have been made in seven of the cattle pens at a cost of £3l 19/6, and it is intended to do more in this direction as funds permit. The provision of more sheep pens is a matter for consideration at the annual meeting. Nothing further has been paid off the arrears on shares and the amount outstanding still stands at £35. The retiring directors are Messrs G. Irwin and D. Dickie, who are eligible for reelection. The auditor, Mr W. D. Shelton, is willing to be re-elected.—W. L. Scott, chairman of directors. The balance-sheet showed the receipts to be £l2B 5/11, and the payments £9l 5/1; leaving a credit balance of £37 0/10.
