DON’T RUSH THINGS
FACETIOUS RATEPAYER ADVICE TO BOROUGH COUNCIL SUDDEN DEATHS PREDICTED A ratepayer who has been pressed by the Borough Council for rates has written as follows to the Council:— “When the 1927 rates were issued I wrote to the Council concerning the state of the road in front of my property. I received a promise that the matter would be looked into, but a year has elapsed and nothing has been done. Don’t rush things too much or there might be a few sudden deaths among the councillors. Now, I think it is most unfair that I should be called upon to pay such heavy rates when the road is in such a condition. We are becoming nervous wrecks, for every time a lorry passes into and over the pot holes in front of our house the vibration is as bad as an earthquake shock. Another thing, the road is not in the centre of the King's highway. The following sketch will perhaps be helpful to you.” (sketch appended). The writer of the letter replied as follows to the questions asked by the Council: Have you any reason to dispute the correctness of the account as rendered?—You rate according to value of property. lam willing to take a lot less than valuation if you get the buyer. Why has the account not been paid?—No money. My son has to go to Australia to look for work (this lovely town would not give him any). If he gets works you might get your rates with Australian bank notes. If not, send in the bailiff. Li the property mortgaged?—Don’t know what you mean. Find out.
