PLUNKET ROOMS

MOVEMENT AT WYNDHAM. CARNIVAL TO BE HELD. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting to discuss the advisability of raising finance for the erection of Plunket and rest rooms at Wyndnam was held on Monday evening, the following being present : Mesdames W. O. C. McKay, VV. S. Stewart, Xj. Kerse, T. M. Strang, P. J. de la Mare, Alex. Ross, A. T. Ross, A. A. Wilson, W. J. Marsh, A. McArthur, R. Winter, D. Todd, M. Tangney, C. E. Davey, Kirk, H, Hunter, Messrs h. Hunter, W. C. McKay, T. M. Strang, P. J. de la Mare, A. T. Ross, C. E. Davey, W. J. Currie, G. Kerse and Miss F. McEwan. Messrs C. E. Davey and A. T. Ross were appointed temporary secretary and chairman respectively for the meeting. Mr Ross, in opening the discussion, saic that all present knew what the meeting had been called for, it being to discuss the

ways and means of raising finance for the erection of the proposed Plunket and rest room in Wyndham. It was considered a necessity to the town and would not only be of benefit to those locally, but a big convenience to the country people, who were most enthusiastic over the scheme. He asked for a discussion on the matter. Mr C. E. Davey suggested passing a motion as to whether a Plunket and rest room be aimed at, or only a Plunket room. Mr Kerse asked if there was any idea as to what the cost of the proposed scheme would be. Mr Davey said there was not, but no matter what amount was raised it would be easily expended. Mrs Strang, president of the local branch, said that the meeting had really been called to discuss the problem of raising money for the erection of both a Plunket and rest room. The society had been renting rooms which were not satisfactory and they were working under a handicap in not having suitable rooms. On the motion of Mr Davey and Mrs Strang it was decided that the meeting approved of the procuring of a rest and Plunket rooms in Wyndham. A lengthy discussion took place as to the ways and means of raising money for the procuring of the rooms. Mr Kerse said that if some idea could be given as to what amount was needed it might be possible to raise it without the holding of a carnival. Mrs Strang said that they hoped to raise in the vicinity of £4OO, as they would require two rooms, a verandah and all con-

veniences. Mr Davey said no doubt a sale of work appealed to the ladies, but there was a tremendous amount of work entailed for a small return. Games were most profitable with very little work. A live committee would probably be able to raise a large amount in that direction. On the motion of Mrs C. E. Davey and Mrs Ross it was decided to hold a carnival towards the end of August. Mr de la Mare said that the country people seemed to be enthusiastic in the matter, as he had received favourable comments in regards to the scheme, and felt sure that they would combine with the local enthusiasts and run concerts and such like in aid of the scheme. They might even run a prince or queen competition in connection with the carnival. A lengthy discussion took place in regard to the control of the proposed erection, and as to whether the local Town Board should be asked to take control of the rooms when finished. Mrs Kirk, who is interested in Plunket work in the north, gave an interesting account of Plunket appeals in her district, and contended that the local committee should have control of the rooms, as they would probably have to do the hard work in connection with the raising of the finance for the erection. It would prove unsatisfactory and perhaps cause friction if some other body controlled the rooms. It was finally decided that the Plunket Society retain control of the rooms when completed, and bear the cost of the upkeep. The following committee was then elected to run the proposed carnival: Messrs A. T. Ross (chairman), C. E. Davey (secretary), W. Richardson (deputy-chairman), G. Kerse, H. Hunter, W. O. C. McKay, N. McEwan and Wilson, Mesdames W. O. C. McKay, A. T. Ross, Alex. Ross, A. A. Wilson, D. Todd, A. McArthur, G. E. Davey, H. Hunter, M. Tangney, P. J. de la Mare, T. M. Strang, with power to add. Mr Macpherson introduced the matter of trustees for the rooms, but it was thought that this matter could be discussed later. It was moved as a recommendation to the committee, that if possible some competition be run in conjunction with the carnival. It was decided that the committee meet * every second Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock, and that further arrangements be left in [ the hands of the committee to attend to. l The first meeting of the committee will take place on Tuesday evening, June 5.
