THE COLLIE DOG

TRIALS AT GORE. GOOD WORK WITNESSED. (From Our Correspondent.) Under perfect weather conditions the 23rd annual trials of the Gore Collie Dog Trial Club were commenced yesterday on the Gore Racing Club’s property. There was a fair attendance of the public who witnessed some fairly good and interesting work throughout the afternoon. The entries showed an increase on those received for last year’s trials there being nine competitors in the Maiden event against eight last year, while in the Driving and Yarding 14 competed as compared with 10 last year. In the Maiden event the work was of medium quality, but nevertheless the placed dogs gave creditable exhibitions, there only being one point of difference between the three. Mr. J. H. McDonald’s Fly beat Mr. L. A. Charleson’s Chance by half a point for first place, but the latter would have had a comfortable win had he yarded. Third place was filled by Mr. T. Reidy’s Pat who was only half a point behind the second dog. The Driving and Yarding event provided good competition and the work in it was of a higher order. The winner turned up in the veteran enthusiast, Mr. S. G. Inder, whose dog, Tip, made a fine run and gained within a point and a half of the possible. The second and third dogs, Messrs T. Reidy’s Athol Jet, and J. R. Anderson’s Tibby also put up good runs and were only separated by half a point. In the Long Pull for allcomers there is an entry of 17, three of which were run yesterday, while the others will be run off to-day. The sheep being used at the trials are strong wethers kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. R. L. Reid, Gore, and they proved very satisfactory for the occasion. The judging was in the hands of Mr. D. Morgan, Te Houka, Balclutha, and his decisions were well received. The judge’s assistant is Mr. John S. Smith, McNab, who has had much experience in the business and whose work was of much assistance to the judge. Excellent arrangements were made for the trials and a strong committee with the well known enthusiast, Mr. J. S. Waddell, Waikaka Valley, at the head of affairs left no stone unturned for the comfort of competitors and the success of the trials. The secretary, Mr. T. Sim had everything in his department systematically arranged and carried out his duties in his usual obliging and courteous manner. During the afternoon a guessing competition for the live weight of a wether was conducted by Mr. Hugh Mclntyre, and this proved a good source of revenue for the club. The winners turned up in Messrs Mclntyre and McKenzie, who assessed the exact weight, 107 A lbs. The trials will be concluded to-day. The results are as follows: Maiden.
