TROOPERS’ MEMORIAL
REMOVAL TO NEW SITE. DISCUSSION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. A proposal to remove the Troopers’ Memorial from its present position caused some discussion at the meeting of the Borough Council last night, when the requirements of the new motor regulations came up as the result of* the following letter from the Southland Motor Association : “Now that motor drivers are required to circle round the Troopers’ Memorial when negotiating the intersection of Dee and Tay streets, it has been suggested to my executive that it would be a very considerable advantage if the square corners of the steps forming the base of the Memorial could be rounded off or modified in some way so as to mitigate as far as possible the inconvenience to motorists that they now constitute.” Cr. Reed remarked that the police had recently taken action in the matter of motorists cutting the corner instead of going around, though the offenders had merely been convicted and discharged. It should not be necessary to go round it. Cr. Macalister said he agreed with Cr. Reed, and asked if the Works Committee had considered the removal of the monument to a more suitable site. There was one memorial at the northern end of the town and he considered that it would be advisable to place the Troopers’ Memorial at the eastern end in Tay street. That would solve the difficulty from the point of view of motorists. Cr. Campbell opposed the idea, expressing the view that it might not prove to be of benefit in the future. “Better to shift the monument than to kill somebody,” was the interjection of a councillor. The Mayor said that as the regulations were enforced by the Government, it would be better to shift the monument. It would be easier to shift it than to shift the regulations. The letter was referred to the Works Committee.
