BAND OF HOPE

MEETING AT GEORGETOWN. The fortnightly meeting of the Georgetown Band of Hope, was held on Friday last, when Mr. A. Dewe presided over a splendid meeting. The meeting opened with hymn and prayer and the reading of Proverbs 20. — 1. 23. 29. 30. An excellent programme, both entertaining and instructive was received with appreciation, several of the performers having to respond to encores. The Rev. A. McBean was the speaker for the evening, and he showed in a very interesting manner, how it was quite the best thing for all to be “total abstainers.” Owing to Mr. Dewe’s removal to Christchurch, and as this was the last meeting over which he would preside, Mr. H. Schroeder in a brief speech spoke in appreciation of Mr. Dewe’s work in connection with the Band of Hope Movement and expressed the keen regret that was felt at Mr. and Mrs Dewe’s departure. On behalf of the children and those friends in the district who desired to express to Mr. and Mrs Dewe, the esteem and the affection in which they are held, Mr. Schroeder asked Mr. Dewe to accept a handsome copper bowl and vase. The Rev. J. Carlisle endorsed the remarks made by Mr. Schroeder and complimented Mr. Dewe on the very fine Band of Hope he had been so largely responsible for. Mr. Dewe returned thanks for Mrs Dewe and himself and thanked the boys and girls and all those who had assisted in the work for their loyal support and cooperation. The following items were presented:— Pianoforte duet—Mrs Dewe and Miss M. Steward; pianoforte solos—Mr. W. Dobie and Master R. Pearce; instrumental item— Mr. Schroeder and Mr. C. Lambert; mandoline duet—Mr and Mrs Taggart; solos—Mrs Mcßean, Mrs Bain, Misses S. Stuck, M. Craigie, M. Allison, Mr. W. Prewer. Song four girls; recitations—Misses P. Dewe, D. Crozier, P. Allison, E. Holding, Master Lindsay Crozier.
