POLAR EXPLORATION

BYRD’S SOUTHERN EXPEDITION. FACILITIES OB' OTAGO PORT OFFERED. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, May 26. At a meeting of the Harbour Board the secretary reported that he had communicated with Blight-Commander Byrd, offering the facilities of the port as a fittingout bast for his expedition before it proceeded to Ross Sea in connection with his projected South Polar expedition. Byrd replied that he was aware that the Port of Otago had been associated with the expedition of Captain Scott and Lieutenant Shackleton and ho would probably call here. The secretary added that Commander Byrd would likely come here with the whaler Larsen when she returned in November. STUDY OF ESKIMO LIFE. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Ottawa, May 26. Under the direction of a National Museum of Canada, Mr Cornelius Osgood, aged 23, of Chicago, will explore the Arctic regions for a year and a half alone in anthropological work. He will take a phonograph to record Eskimo apd Indian songs.—Australian Press Association.
