IN TOWN AND OUT
NEWS OF THE DAY. Physical Training In School. It was mentioned at the meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute on Saturday that it was probable that drastic changes would be made in the physical instruction in schools. * * * * Persistent Offender. To appear at the Police Court four times in a week is the record achieved by an exmember of the Hurunui’s crew—Michael Murphy. The fourth charge was preferred against him on Saturday morning—that of drunkenness —and he is now serving two days’ penance in the Invercargill gaol. The first two charges were of absenting himself without leave from his ship and the third of disobeying lawful commands. * » ♦ * As Others See Us. “The first thing that struck me when I got off the boat to-night was the good fellowship which seemed to prevail,” said one of the crew of a boat now at Bluff. “I had not left the wharf before two men had cheerily called out ‘goodnight.’ In both cases I turned round to see if I knew them, but I had never seen either of them before. That’s much different to what we have been used to. If you speak to a man at Home he gets one of two ideas —first that you are a crook or secondly that you want to borrow the price of a drink. It’s a great change for us and one we appreciate.” * * * * Chair-o-plane Departs. The corner section of Esk and Kelvin streets will once more look cold and desolate at nights with the departure of the chair-o-plane and steam roundabout which with its gay lights and stirring music attracted the attention of passers-by during the season in Invercargill. On practically every occasion when the chair-o-plane was in full swing, a large crowd assembled either to whirl at break-neck speed through the air or to stand nearby to watch others in their flight. Now the lights and gaiety are gone and no more will the lilt of “Colonel Bogey” clash with the stirring strains of the “Marseillaise” to the annoyance of indoor workers in that vicinity.
