THE SAME OLD STORY
SOUTHLAND OVERLOOKED AGAIN. At last night’s meeting of the Southland League, the secretary read the following letter from the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. O. .1. Hawken) in reply to representations from the league that Southland be included in the tour of the Empire Forestry Conference: “I am in receipt of your letter expressing the disappointment of your league that the itinerary for the delegates to the Empire Forestry Conference does not provide for a visit to Southland. I sympathize with you in this respect, but as the delegates will have only 15 days for New Zealand, part of which must necessarily be taken up by conference deliberations,, there appears to be no alternative to the proposed arrangements. The delegates are visiting New Zealand purely for professional purposes, and their chief objects will be to inspect the State forest nurseries, plantations of the best types of indigenous forests. In the short lime available it is impossible for the delegates to see all places of professional interest, and although it is regretted that this results in the omission of Southland you will, I think, appreciate that it is unavoidable under the circumstances.” Amid a chorus of “The same old story,” the letter was received.
