FARMERS’ UNION
WAIKAKA VALLEY BRANCH. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waikaka Valley branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Maitland School on Tuesday evening. There was an attendance of fifteen members, presided over by the chairman, Mr A. Nicol. Correspondence from the provincial secretary re the levy for the Canterbury farmers was received, and the secretary’s action in forwarding the amount of £2 3/- was approved. The principal business of the meeting was the consideration of the agenda for the annual Provincial Conference on May 25 Permits on the subjects of railway, motor transport, motor taxation and free trade, caused considerable discussion. The delegate was instructed how to votejn a num ber of cases and in others he was given a free hand. The chairman and Messrs H. Smith and A. R. Johnston reported on the proposal to build a combined Farmers’ Union and Women’s Division meeting and rest room in Gore. It was agreed that a paper on ‘‘Basic Slag,” prepared by Mr D. Gilchrist, be held over for a later meeting.
