SHOW CONCLUDES

SOUTHLAND’S WINTER FIXTURE. SEASON PROVES SUCCESSFUL. Southland’s Winter Show concluded last night, after what is considered to be a very successful season. There were good attendances at all sessions, indicating the popularity of the premier winter exhibition of the province. The total receipts are expected to show a slight decline as compared with last year, but the results are regarded as highly satisfactory. Following the large attendances of People’s Day—Wednesday—there were large numbers present during afternoon and evening yesterday and the fixture concluded amid scenes of enthusiasm. Musical programmes provided in the evening added to the enjoyment of the visitors and to some extent the May Fair spirit j>enetrated the show hall, there being a fair sprinkling of fantastically-clad figures in the building. Much interest was displayed in the various exhibits and stalls did brisk business throughout. The total gate receipts for the first two days amounted to £245 14/, as against £294 12/6 last year. Yesterday’s receipts were slightly less than those of the closing day last year, but the gross total was expected to approach closely that of last year on account of the guessing competitions. The individual days’ takings were: Tuesday, £39 14/6 as against £54 1/ ; Wednesday, £205 19/6 as against £240 11/6. Yesterday’s takings were not available. In addition, the association will benefit by its share of the May Fair takings, which reached the total of £3BB. The competition amongst trade exhibits at the show was won by the Rosedale Woollen Mills, with Lane Bros and W. Strang (equall second. The judges were Messrs W. F. Bissett and M. N. Hyndman. The sheep-guessing competition on the first day resulted as follows:—The pheep weighed 1331bs and the first prize was divided by Misses P. Gardiner, of Invercargill, and M. Thornton, of Waimatuku, who guessed 132|lbs and 133 Jibs respectively. Messrs S. T. Evans, of Longbush, and D. Lee. of Invercargill, who guessed 1351 b«, divided the third prize.
