WENDONSIDE NOTES

OPENING OF HAU* (From Our Correspondent.) The district has just experienced one of the wettest autumns on record which has had one good effect by softening the lea for the plough. More congenial conditions have prevailed during the last week, and it is hoped that they will continue well into the winter. The turnip crop, on the whole is good this year, and that, coupled with the good roughness about the paddocks will ensure an abundant supply of winter feed The local hall which recently underwent several very necessary improvements, was officially opened on Friday evening with a dance. A good crowd turned out and an enjoyable entertainment resulted. The music, which was of a very high order was supplied by Mr and Mrs Gilmour, ably assisted by Mr Kelly on the cornet, extras being supplied by Miss McKissock and Mr E. Sanson. Mr W. Matheson carried out the duties of M.C. in a courteous manner. As a result of the recent carnival, supplemented with a few recent entertainments the hall now stands free of debt, which is very gratifying to the committee. The local teacher, Mr McMillan, has the children undergoing solid training for a school concert, and a good entertainment is anticipated on June 1. Mr Hugh Martin who has been a resident of the district for nearly thirty years has disposed of his farm, and intends to return to his native county in the north of Ireland shortly. Mr W. Johnston and Sons, of Waikaia, were the purchasers. The opening of the duck season did not result in a very great slaughter amongst the ducks. Quite a number only took their guns out for a walk. Only one bag of any importance was registered. Messrs Maher Bros, securing some twenty odd on their property.
